| Hurghada | Hurghada better than Sharm, Am I right? Posted: Mon March 3, 2008 08:31 PM UTC
As I understand it, Hurghada compared with Sharm El sheikh, has more character, has more city life and is less sterile. Hurghada also seems to be better placed for visitiing Cairo, Luxor and other places on the Nile. I also understand that both places are good bases for diving. On the other hand Sharm, I hear is less windy. however It looks like Hurghada, for me is the bet place to go. Is there anything wrong with my uneducated conclusions? Can anyone confirm or deny any of this?

Well I am sure there would be a few people living in SSH who would disagree,
but as I live in Hurghada I say 'rock on'. Yes it is easier to visit Cairo, Luxor from here. Either can be done by coach or you can fly to Cairo. Luxor still has to be a journey across the desert though by convoy. There are some excellent dive sites both just off the Hurghada coast or further down south in Marsa Alam. It is 31 here today and of course the temperature will rise but usually there is a slight breeze which keeps it very manageable. Hurghada has a lot of building work going on, but also some superb restaurants and dance places. So all in all, yes come to Hurghada.

I tend to avoid both Sharm and Hurghada. Going there just passing by.
I was in Hurghada 2 weeks ago on my way from Port Khaleb to Cairo. It looked like a gigantic building pit to me, as did the entire coast of the Red Sea. Our drivers, both locals from Hurghada, said that 75% of the tourists there are Russian. Also the Appartments being built there are bought by Russians. Hurghada is easier when you like to go to Luxor, Aswan or Cairo. 4 hours to Luxor, 5 hours to Aswan, 6 hours to Cairo. Egyptian time!!! It is stretchable. From Marsa Alam to Cairo took us an entire day: pick up at 8am, convoy meet in Hurghada around 12am; arrival in Cairo hotel 7pm.

Well, Hurghada Lady lives in Hurghada. She knows more about it than I. I just expressed the impression I got when being there for about 2,5 hours and what our taxi drivers (living in Hurghada) told us during our trip from Port Khaleb to Cairo.
I tend to avoid the popular sites in all the countries I visit for vacation. I want to go to the more quiet, unknown places.
