| Jamaica | Mayfield Falls Posted: Mon March 3, 2008 12:48 PM UTC
Will be in JA soon and was thinking about visiting Mayfield Falls with the family. Although I'm very familiar with JA, I've never been to Mayfield Falls and I get the impression it's a more strenuous visit than YS, Reach or Dunns River. My relatively healthy 69 year old mother and 2 year old son will be with us, so was wondering if the visit is still worthwhile with them coming along or if it might be too much for them to enjoy. Any opinions? Thanks.

I went to Jamaica with my next door neighbor, who is from there and my kids who are great soccer players, at their levels, and they were the only ones in the required shape to really enjoy. They were bouncing everywhere. The rest of us manage and took breaks to enjoy the scene and chat. Yes, the Mayfield falls are quite a hike. Very pretty but you must be in shape. Maybe only some of your family can go or take the hike while the rest do something else or you can go at a slow pace.

"The climb up the falls is not terribly strenuous if you are in reasonable shape but there are a few sections that are slippery and steep. And the climb back up to the parking lot is pretty steep (esp. for us flatlanders from the Midwest!)."
That's what I wrote after we visited Mayfield Falls, I don't recall it being more strenuous than Dunn's River but I can't see a 2 year old making that climb either.

Mayfield Falls is not a hard experience, but the walk back up to the parking lot is a killer for most. A 2 yr old really can not do the falls. There are a few other place that you can enjoy the mineral waters of Jamaica depending on where you are staying. If you are in Negril, there are about 5 different places to visit for swimming, all about an hours drive. There is Abeokuta and Williamsfield for swimming. Roaring River has a huge cave with places to swim inside. A little past Roaring River {called Rolling River in Jamaica} called Benji's. YS Falls is alot easier then Mayfield.
