I would not pay with credit card as there is a charge and the credit card has to be verified in Nairobi, which takes two days. Cash is king in Eritrea, as there are no ATM's. Fixed rate to US$ of 15 Nakfa; other currencies fluctuate.

In Asmara, you could try the Intercontinental hotel, which has a good rate if you book on line, or the Crystal Hotel if you want somewhere clean, popular, central and a bit cheaper. Both have web sites. In Messawa, only cash accepted.

Remember to declare all hard currency on arrival, keep receipts and show the balance on departure.

Ithink the chance of you paying with e-gold in East Africa would be nil.

One more advise, in addition to declaring all your hard currency on arrival and keeping receipts while in Eritrea, do use non authorized money changers. The government is very strict on this and you will be requested to show the balance of your money and all the changes you made on departure. The only authorized money changing agency is called Himbol.
