| Boston | Colder than usual? Visiting in end of March and getting a bit worried Posted: Mon March 3, 2008 08:05 AM UTC
Aloha again all! It's the worry-wart from Hawaii. It's getting closer to our trip (last week in March) and it seems to me that the weather is colder than it usually is???
I have the temps for Boston on my iphone and well...your high temp is 25*F lower than our LOW temp here. According to the history at wunderground, the avg temp is supposed to be in the 40 or 50's during the last week in Mar. Is that still possible, being that it's still so cold there only 3 weeks before? I was thinking about it and the hottest temp there right now is just a bit warmer than the chill room where the salad is kept at Costco. brrrrrrr! I think our tops will be fine with the layering and the jackets/coats that we found, but is jeans enough (maybe with tights or nylons underneath)? I couldn't find cordoroy as someone suggested before. Also, will we look dumb wearing beanie type hats? My jacket doesn't have a hood, so I'll have to wear a hat but don't want to stick out like a tourist. Do we need waterproof shoes? Can we just spray our sneakers w/ waterproofing spray? I have leather ankle boots, but my husband and daughter only have sneaker/running shoes. Thanks so much again for all of your help. We're getting excited ... but also freaking out a bit about the cold weather you guys are having! |

It can change so quickly there. I would gamble it will be 40-45F in the day at the end of March. Wear your sneakers and then go to Costco or Walmart and pick up some $20 discard ankle boots if it is colder. A sweater and a Gortex jacket or nylon golf jacket will suffice in cooler temps. A touque or ski hat will be $5-10 there also.

I wouldn't worry at all about the weather till your trip gets a lot closer. The weather is very changeable in Boston during March, and by that time it could be much, much warmer than what you're seeing now. Just keep your eyes on a five day forecast before you leave. And don't worry about looking like a tourist!!

Spray your sneakers but have warm cotton, silk or wool socks.
I would suggest a scarf for each of you. Even if it is a cotton "wrap" style from Hawaii. I wear them as scraves which I can put on my head or shoulders or around my neck. On the plane they work great as a lap blanket. You may also consider bringing a sweat shirt hoodie, so you have pockets for your hands and a hood. As suggested above check the temps in the week leading up t your trip to Mass. I believe it will be considerably warmer during the day but be ready to wear all your layers in the evening chill.

We do get a lot of weather related questions like this. However, let me first state that we have no idea what the weather will be on the particular dates when you're going to be here. We have to check the weather forecasts every day just to see what tomorrow will be, never mind weeks from now.
That being said, it is generally warmer later in March than in the beginning of March. However, these are just averages. So if early March is colder or warmer) than usual, it has absolutely no bearing on what the temperatures will be like in three weeks - or even three days. If you're a math person, let me put it in terms you might relate to. The averages go up during the month, but the standard deviations are so big that they can easily dwarf the change in average temperature. For you non-math folks, the weather is variable enough on a daily basis that you can't predict what the temperature will be on a given day in the future. So, what to do. Dress in layers. Bring shirts (which I'm sure you will), a sweater or two, and a waterproof jacket of some kind. Then you "mix and match", depending what kind of weather you encounter. What I WOULDN'T do is buy anything special to deal wih the weather. Who knows if you will need it? We certainly don't. So wait until you come. You can always buy an additional something if needed while you're here. And in most situations, it's probably cheaper here anyway. Will it rain? We don't know. Will it snow? We don't know. What do you wear on your feet there when it's raining? Well, rain is rain. Snow is cleared pretty quickly, so wetness and puddles are much more common an issue. Hope all this helps!! AlanSM

As most people here have already stated, the weather here is variable, but it will be relatively colder than Hawaii. Dressing in layers is really the way to go. I think that there will be more rain/wet weather than snow around that time of the month. Enjoy your trip & safe travels!!!

Hi, by the end of March the average temp should be around 50F, so don't worry. It's 55F today, although windy. I think a warm jacket will be enough, and a beanie won't look silly. And anyway, Boston is a city people walk about in, that should warm you up. Have fun and go to the ICA {institute of contemp art} it's cool, your daughter will like it. Garrett
