Prince Edward Island I need help planning my trip.
Posted: Sun March 2, 2008 03:47 PM UTC
hello
I plan to come to PEI in the last week of april.
I am a student, and would be interested in student deals at hotels or around the area, if there are any.
i will be coming over by ferry from halifax.
what is the name of the ferry, what is the price, and where in PEI will it let me off?? I want to arrange a hotel but it's hard because I don't want to make it too far away from the ferry drop off. also I am travling alone so I need a safe place to stay. I was looking at a hostel, Hi Charlottetown, but I'm not sure if it is close to the ferry. also it seems to be the only hostel on the island.

help, please!

Actually, I think the ferry to PEI is free. They charge you for leaving the island (I think it is the same whether you leave by ferry or by the Confederation bridge). If you do not have a vehicle, the ferry is probably inconvenient as it leaves NS from a small town (near Pictou). As has been mentioned, the bus is probably easier.

In regards to your other question, I doubt that you would find a bus tour that covers NS, PEI and NB in four days. There is just too much territory to cover. If you can only stay for a week, especially without a vehicle, you will have to decide where your priorities lie (PEI, or Cabot trail or other parts of NS or NB). You will have to come back some time to see the rest.

If you are a single traveller, that tour sounds fine. As you can see from the map of the tour, the ferry leaves NS, and arrives in PEI from small towns -- unless you are in a car or on a bus, you are stuck in the middle of nowhere.

When we visit Cape Breton Island for instance, we tend to stay longer - hiking many of the 28 trails in the park, attending their Celtic music shows called Ceilidhs, walking more beaches, spending all day at the Fortress of Louisbourg, etc.

This tour seems to touch on areas in Cape Breton and PEI (although I would not say you really visited New Brunswick as all you are doing is driving from the Confederation Bridge directly to Nova Scotia on your return day).

I agree with redlats in regards to splitting the trip up by priority. You will be arriving in the off season anyways so you'll already be getting a deal on lodging if you shop around. Also check to make sure everything you want to do is open regular hours. If it were me with only four days I would go with Cape Breton or PEI, if it rains the entire trip at least you'll have scenery you'll never forget.

I've never heard of a ferry going from Halifax to PEI, though I do know there is one that goes from Pictou to PEI (not to Charlottetown though, it goes to Wood Island - way out of town). It might be easier to just take the bus from Halifax to Charlottetown (it's about a 4-5 hour ride).
