Belize how call international. camping with internet and phone
Posted: Sat March 1, 2008 07:09 PM UTC
We have a 20 foot RV. We'd like to be somewhere we can

1 snorkel without getting into a boat,

2 use internet with a wireless, dialup or a cable connection,

3 call internationally for less than a fortune,

4 have our Mexican cell phone connected so that we can receive calls,

5 plug in to electricity every few days to charge the batteries.

6 fill up our wash water tank

7 fill our 20 liter drinking water containers

8 Let our cat out without being hassled by too many dogs

9 Somewhere not crowded

10 Somewhere beautiful

We're used to dry camping and rarely seeing other tourists, so this is kind of an experiment for us.

Possible?

If it's really good, we might do it for quite a few months.

Serious responses very much appreciated. Quick would be lovely: we're on the border.

Most of the snorkeling is off the cays which you not only can't access without flying or getting into a boat, but you can't take your RV out there. Other than that it's probably mostly Placencia. I do not know if you can plug in an RV there.

I haven't been to Belize since 1998, and I don't know what the internet is like there now. It was non-existent in 1998. There is a camping/RV park outside San Ignacio, but they have birds and cows and other animals so don't know about your cat.

Yes, you can forget about the cayes with your RV but you could drive down from the Mayan Riviera area onto Ambergris Cay (by small ferry or bridge) where the town of San Pedro is located. This is a well-developed tourist location with everything from major resorts to cheap accoms. They have lots of restaurants and an internet cafe or two as well.

My wife and I found the mainland roads in the rest of Belize to be not too bad - paved with speed bumps and pot-holes here and there. Some places like Orangewalk might be interesting but we spent our time in Belmopan, San Ignacio (Guatemala border area) and Hopkins on the southeast coast. On that coast, we found an internet cafe in Dangriga but the working town itself wasn't a very attractive place. Hopkins was quaint and had a beautiful beach but no internet services. Placentia is further south and is really set-up with resorts and so on, but we never made it that far. San Ignacio is quite a busy little town and there seems to be lots to do in the area (Mayan ruins, river tubing, etc.) It has internet cafes and several restaurants and places to stay as well. However, I don't know if any of these places have RV facilities. We were backpacking for 3 weeks and also rented a vehicle for 3-days for a roundtrip drive from Belize City to Belmopan and San Ignacio. I'd stay clear of Belize City if possible.

Clarisa Falls http://www.clarissafalls.com/belize-lodging.shtml in the Cayo District outside of San Ignacio has a campground which includes places for RVs.

It is on a river and they have various activities there. I don't know about the internet or water, but I'm pretty sure they have electricity.

I forgot to mention on my earlier posting that the Belize telephone Area Code is just another one in the North American network. While arranging my trip, I called several places there from long-distance from Canada and the charges were no different than anywhere else I've called in this hemisphere.

Sorry Bwana- I don't think it's possible to drive from Mexico south onto Ambergris. There is a road but you can barely get a golfcart down it and san Pedro is a good 15 miles south of the Mexican Border.

Maybe you can stop in the town of Corozal I have heard good things about that area-C
