Glasgow Etap - Springfield Quay
Posted: Sat March 1, 2008 04:41 PM UTC
Hi all

I'm coming to Glasgow later this month but a severe travel addiction means that I don't have much money for accommadation. I was thinking of staying in the Etap hotel at Springfield Quay. However, although it does not look too far from the centre I did notice on the map that the Clyde and the M8 stand between the hotel and the city centre. How easy is it to get around? Anyone know about public transport?

Hi Suzanne, Glasgow has a very good & cheap ( in my opinion ) subway or underground sytem. http://www.spt.co.uk/subway/. Also for accommadation how about Travelodge ? Take a look at www.travelodge.co.uk as they have rooms at Glasgow central from £29 or Glasgow Paisley Road from £19 on certain dates later this month. Darren.

hi, no worries, the etap hotel on springfield quay is on the same side of the river as the city centre and within easy walking distance.
If you don't wish to walk glasgow has an excellent transport system, although you'll probably only need a bus for the short distance to the centre.
If in doubt, stand at a bus stop and look lost.
Invariably someone will ask you where you want to go and you'll get precise instructions.
The accentis difficult to understand but the hearts are generous

The Etap hotel is NOT on the same side of the river as the city centre. However, it is within walking distance. The M8 is elevated at that stage, so you will walk under it. Shields Road underground station is about 10 minute walk away and is you best option for access to the west end of town. Note that the etap hotel is not in the most salubrious area of town and you should be careful around there. It isn't considered a dangerous area, but there is a high level of antisocial behaviour.

I would be more inclined to try another area, but that's just my 40 years of experience here.

This hotel is brand new and close to the Quay with restaurants and cinemas. It`s only 5 minutes on the bus to the city centre, `the toon` Every eastbound bus goes there! You can walk it in about 15 minutes but be careful when you get a bus back from town. Ask if they go along Paisley Road. The nearby restaurant, `La Fiorentina` at Paisley Road Toll has a good reputation.

Hi guys

I love this forum! Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I've decided to go for the Etap as it's half the price of even the Travelodge at Easter. I'll probably walk into down during the day but get a bus or taxi back late at night. I've wanted to vist Glasgow for ages so am really looking forward to my trip.

Thanks again, Suzanne

Just been reminded about this, and thought I'd pop back to share my views.

The Etap itself is like any Etap. A bit more like a hostel than a hotel and full of young people staying for the nightlife. However I personaly did not have any problems with noise. The shower is in the room and is clear glass, so unless you are staying with a partner, or are not shy, it might be difficult. However for the price I was quite happy.

As for the location, it was a 10 / 15 minute walk from town. I had planned to get a taxi back late at night but to be honest the area felt quite safe to me and as the walk was along a main road I didn't bother. I wouldn't do it alone, but then I wouldn't walk anywhere alone late at night.

Loved Glasgow, found the people to be amazingly friendly and helpful and the nightlife was great. :-)
