| Naxos Island | advice and help please, going to naxos Posted: Sat March 1, 2008 03:29 PM UTC
hi guys, im new to this forum and need someone to point me in the right direction, so ive decided on goin to naxos this year around july/aug for 2 weeks. first problem is ive looked around the uk tour operators and there only seems to be kosmar who can get me to naxos! is this correct as i dont fancy making my own way there like a lot of people do, second thing can some one tell me the best resort, i looking for somewhere with nice beach, peacefull no nightclubs but with enough taverna/bars to keep us happy will be renting a car etc to see the island but would like a nice base, ive been too many greek islands and always had a good time but places like kos/rhodes/corfu just to commercialised for me prefer places like thassos/lesvos/kefalonia so im i making a good choice in naxos??? in particular is there any resort/accom i should avoid as it looks like il only be able to choose what kosmar has to offer... as much advice will be greatly appreciated or you can email me at ozbod1@ntlworld.com...thanks in advance spencer

Because Naxos' popularity does not rival that of Santorini or Mykonos, it's no surprise that organized tour operators are difficult to find. You do have a couple of options that way, though. If you happen to be coming from the UK you can find a charter that will take you directly to Santorini without a stop in Athens, and from Santorini you can catch a ferry to Naxos. In July and August there will be several each day. You also have the option of flying on Olympic Airlines from Athens to Naxos as well as some ferry choices from Athens/Piraeus, both highspeed and slower car ferry.
As far as "a good choice" is concerned, Naxos is growing in popularity each year so now is the time to go before it becomes over-commercialized. But if you want to experience something even less-developed in the Cyclades, Antiparos is an excellent choice. You can get there by plane (again, Olympic Airlines) from Athens to Paros and then rest of the way by local shuttle boat. The local shuttle ferry is a very short trip and there are several crossings every day. These shuttles depart from both Parikia, the main village, and from Pounta, a small port very close to the airport by taxi. Pounta>Antiparos only takes 15 minutes. And there are the same ferry options to Paros from either Athens/Piraeus or Santorini.

I didn't like much Naxos. This is only my opinion. I spent a week in Naxos town, or the capital town. This is really beautiful. It has a nice old core. I'd recommend to choose that place as a base to explore the island.

Aghios Georgios is good. It's very convenient to Naxos town and the beach is calm and clean.

also forgot to mention that my girlfriend likes really quiet and peacefull resorts as she has a stressfull job so when we go on holidays she really just wants to get away from it all , perhaps a handfull of bars/tavernas where you could sit and watch the sun go down over a few drinks etc by the sea and explore the island in the daytime would make her very happy me too also...thx

Congratulations!
We have selected one of the best Greek islands to spend your summer holidays! Hopefully, Naxos has not yet been discovered by "mass tourism", so, it' s much better to discover an island "neglected" by the masses! As far as tour operators are concerned, I do not know much.I presume that you are British and the fact is that in Naxos we have many tourists from the Scandinavian countries and Germany, so I am used to see around people travelling with Scandinavian and German operators. The best places to stay in Naxos are: Aghios Prokopios, Aghia Anna, Plaka and Mikri Vigla. There is a wonderful "golden beach" stretching from the Town of Naxos to the southern part of the island, for more or less around 40 kms!Sometimes, it gets "very exotic": there are dunes and cedar trees! For your information: the beach of Aghios (pronounced: Ayios) Prokopios was voted by Internet users, last year, as the 5th best in Greece! You will find a lot of tavernas to eat, the choice is difficult. Do not miss in the Town of Naxos, its "medieval part" called "Castro" (meaning: Castle or Fortress).A unique experience, due to the fact that the Venetians chose the upper part of the Town to live and there are a lot of "living memories" from that period (actually the majority of the Castro inhabitants are descendents from those Venetian families): mansions with coat of arms, the Catholic Cathedral, the Archaeological, as well as, the Venetian Museum. For more information: www.naxosisland.gr Spend some wonderful holidays in Naxos!

If you say your girlfriend has a stressful job and wants to relax .... then if yo uhave a choice for 2 weeks, I would CERTAINLY go in July -- the first 2 weeks if possible. The end of July and all of August EVERYWHERE in Greece is packed with huge mobs from UK, Germany etc etc etc pouring in ... earlier, it is not as crowded, and therefore much more relaxing. Don't ignore this warning, or you will be saying, why are there so many people????
Hope you have a great time... I love Naxos ... PRokopios Beach will be fine for you... plenty of bars & tavernas but not clubs to drum-drum-drum all night.
