Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Arles What should I definitely not miss in Arles?
Posted: Fri September 26, 2003 08:03 PM UTC
I will see the usual things - the Arena- and so on, and I like museums.
I would also like to go to the Camargue to see the wildlife and scenery , probably on a day trip or two. The Lonely Planet guide book for Provence mentions 1 company that does do day trips from Arles.
Any suggestions gratefully receive. I will be in Arles October 5th to about 12th or so.
Thanks.

Your Lonely Planet guide will tell you pretty much all you need to know about Arles. Other good day trips are Nimes and the Pont du Gard. You can also get to Beacaire and Tarascon, which have castles on opposite sides of the river. Take insect repellent to the Camargue. Scenery in the conventional sense doesn't exist there - unless you class expanses of flat marsh as scenery. The wildlife should be good - though the birds are often the easiest things to see there. There are beavers too, but they're kinda cryptic. As for train travel from Paris, you're looking at the Gare de Lyon. See www.sncf.com for details. Have a good trip.

VAN GOGH painted a lot while he lived in Arles. Unfortunately there is little left to remind us that he even lived there at all. I believe there is a commemorative plaque at the hospital where he was a patient and that's about all.

Go to www.vangoghgallery.com scroll down to Arles. According to the site Van Gogh was most prolific while he resided in Arles from Feb. 1988 to May 1989.During that time he produced an astonishing 187 scetches/paintings including one of his most famous 'Sunflowers in a vase'.

My husband and I picked up a half-day organized tour (from Avignon, a 10-15 min train ride) of Pont-du-Gard, Les Baux and St. Remy. We did not have a car, so this was a great option for us. We arranged for the tour from our hotel (L'Amphitheatre). Avignon is an interesting place as well.
