Very good information in previous post. It is wise touse a travel agent or a local expert, it will save you considerable time and trouble at a very small fee.

Just adding 1 tid-bit - book early if possible and do not take seat availability for granted. For peak travel season(s), trains could be fully booked several months ahead of time. Train travel in India can be chaotic and unpredictable.

In December 2007, at the last minute I tried going from Kerala to Goa or to Bangalore or to Mumbai by train , gave up and ended flying instead.

The distances (Kms);
N.Delhi- Mumbai- 1542, Mum-Goa- 796, Goa- Trivandrum (Capital of Kerala)- 1250 approx.
Train fare (Rajdhanni Express)in INR- ND-Mum- AC Ist-4135, ACII- 2210, ACIII- 1485
Corrosponding fare-Mum-Goa- 2000,1000, 700, Goa-TVM- 3650,1970,1340.
For other trains, fares are less. There is a sleeper class ticket in other trains. The fares from N. Delhi to Mumbai-in ordinary sleeper class (No AC, Wooden berths) is around RS 400/-. (1US$= INR 40/- approx). Rajdhani fares are inclusive of meals. You can get continental dishes on request. Blankets, bed sheets and towels are provided in the train. The above fares have been reduced by 7 to 15 % during recent budget.
The time taken from Delhi to mumbai by Rajdhani exp- 17 hrs. Other trains- 24 hrs. Konkan railway (Mum-Ker) route is very picturesque.

You probably won't want to stand in line to get tickets, so contact my India guide who is described in my General Tip for India. Navin Pandey, a Delhi agent, can reliably arrange this all at very reasonable cost. Good luck...

Thanks heaps everyone for all your help.

I think we are going to decide between flights and trains when we are there. The trains seem very complicated but we would like to try them.

Your help has been greatly apprecitated.

Naturally, Navin can also get you ticketed for internal airlines, and help you get a car and driver if you need one. We took an overnight train from Jaipur to Udaipur, which was enough for that adventure during our trip around Northern India.

Train tickets are very cheap compared even to budget air lines such as Spicejet, Go air, Deccan etc. mininimum tax on air ticket is nearly INR 2000/-.
Buget air lines fare and ACI Rajdhani train fare are more or less equal. A travel agent can advise you better if you have prepared the itenary.

Hi there,

If you buy the LONELY PLANET for India for your trip I can guarantee you that you won't be disspointed. Its a excellent book and I have been to india 3 times and used it everytime and it was spot in with prices, accommodation, train durations etc etc. It's def worth buying even if you go for short time as if you like it first time like I did then you will go back!!

Good luck,

Oh and BTW you don't have to stand in line if you are a woman. You get to go straight to the front of the line and it DOESN'T matter if you are not indian. I did it and I didn't get frowned upon at all.

The train journeys are part of the adventure! I loved them!..... all you need to do is ask and people are very helpful.

Good luck,
