Garmisch-Partenkirchen Train from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Posted: Thu February 28, 2008 03:17 PM UTC
We are scheduled for a trip to Germany May 10-20 2008. We will fly into Munich and will be staying at the Edelweiss Lodge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I have been researching the possibility of taking the train from Munich to G-P, could anyone share any experence they have had using this method of reaching either G-P or the Edelweiss. I also am wondering how baggage would be handled? Is there a way to check baggage from Munich to G-P or will we have to lug it with us the whole way. Any other information about transportation in and around G-P or the Edelweiss would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help.

If the places you wish to travel falls within the State of Bavaria, you can travel with Bayern ticket. It costs Euro 29/-, and upto 5 persons can travel with this ticket on a particular day any where in Bavaria which include Salsburg in Austria also. Nuremberg, Bamberg and Erlangen fallin Bavarian state. Don't miss the Fairy tale castle near Munich. To travel out of Bavaria, you may buy railway ticket for upyo 5 persons for Euro 49/- to travel on a particular day.Bayern ticket is valid for local metros/ buses also.
Many of the railway stations have clock room for depositing laguages.

Hi,

I visited G.P. last summer. The train from Munich is the best option; it's a one and a half hour trip and there are trains every thirty minutes. The price is 16.90 euro one way, but if you are travelling with more people you should buy a Bayern Ticket instead. It's a special deal with which (up to) five passengers can travel for a whole day on the Bavarian region for a fixed price of 27 euros. It's not valid on weekends.
You can get all the information about train timetable and prices at the DB (Germain Railways) site:
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml
(In case you were wondering: there's absolutely no need to book trains in advance)

I don't know about the Edelweiss Lodge, but G.P. has a simple network of urban buses you can use for free by showing your "visitor credential" (they give it to you at every hotel or guesthouse and is valid for the term of your stay).
Have fun,

Luciano

Hi there,

try www.db.de

This is the official site of the German Rail.
The most easiest way from Munich to Garmisch would be by train.
You can check out the scheduels there and buy the tickets online.
Site available in English.
Trains call at Munich Central Station. From the airport you can take the suburban rail without changing I think. You can get tickets for that at the airport.
Everything about suburban rail you can find in English at:
http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/index.html

The way from Garmisch station to the Edelweiss you can check at:
http://www.uk.map24.com/ or www.map24.de

Have nice stay in the snow.

Greetz from Berlin.

luciano is incorrect. The Bayern Länderticket is VALID THE ENTIRE DAY on weekends. It's a little confusion.

The non-validity of "Bayern Länderticket" is BEFORE 9AM to prevent people commuting to work on it. But after 9AM it's fine on the WORKDAYS.

During the weekend there is no commuting, so the Ländrticket is valid the entire day, without restriction.

The "Bayern Länderticket" is the absolutely best way to go if there are more than one of you, buy it.

IMPORTANT:

Keep in mind, the Munich Airport -> Munich sation is 8 or 10 Euro (don't remember) for individual person, but if you buy the "Bayern Länderticket" at the airport, it is already valid for the ride on S-Bahn from the airport. You will save pretty big.

You will have to carry your bags yourself, no check-in service for trains.
It's better to pack two small bags than one big one, much easier to put them on the train and to walk through the aisle.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: MUC airport
To: Garmisch-Partenkirchen
To: Breitenau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Either taxi from Garmisch-Partenkirchen station or bus to Breitenau.

The whole trip (incl. bus) is covered by the Bavaria Ticket.
One change of trains in Munich. The trains involved are rather luggage friendly.

There is also the Werdenfels-Ticket, kind of reginal version of the Bavaria Ticket for the Werdenfelser Land.

We stayed at the Edelweiss Lodge last August, and arrived by train to Garmisch. We took a taxi from the station; the driver spoke English and was very familiar with the Edelweiss. Once we checked in, we took the city bus around town and even back to the train station. There is a bus stop within walking distance tof the Lodge. The Lodge has laundry facilities, so if you can manage with only one bag, that would cut back on any potential problems carrying or pulling your luggage.

Since the Lodge is so close to the town of Mittenwald, we took the train to Mittenwald in the afternoon and had a lovely time in that beautiful place. The Edelweiss also offers various group tours.

I want to thank everyone for their responses, you all have been extremely helpful. We're looking forward to our first time in Europe and will thoroughly research the train system and will more than likely use the train to get to G-P. Thanks again and don't be surprised if you see me back here with more questions.

I am so envious... my wife and I have stayed at the Edelweiss twice now, and it's a great place! Please, please, please go by the coffee shop on the Army post (across the parking lot from the Commissary and PX) and say "hello" to Nick for us. Nick is very, very nice and will offer all sorts of great advice on things to do. We stayed in the cabins at the vacation village in addition to the lodge; both are great facilities. You will have a great time!

FWIW, my wife and I bought the Bayern Pass to get to GaP from Munich; it was very easy to do. Others have already noted that packing a few small bags is the way to go, and they are right. You will find that the train has a little room next to the seat in the aisle for suitcases, and there are racks above your head for bags as well.

Our departing flight left too early to make it to Munich in time by train, so we rented a car one-way from Europcar for about 55 Euro and just dropped it off at the airport. There is a Europcar office at the Army post (by the Subway shop at the PX). As I recall, if you make the reservation through them but pay at the downtown office upon pickup, you can save the VAT.

Have fun; we are jealous!!!

Chris and Ann
