| Paraguay | Visa and Yellow Fever Posted: Thu February 28, 2008 06:17 AM UTC
Hi all,
Going to be in Iguazu on both the Brazilian and Argentine side in two weeks. I am leaving home tomorrow and do not have time to get a Paraguayan visa for a trip to Ciudad del Este. How easy is this to obtain upon arrival in either Foz do Iguacu, Brasil or Peurto de Iguazu, Argentina, and how long does this take...same day, overnight, 1 week, etc? Please let me know if my friend and I will need this and how to obtain. We are US citizens. Second issue is the current yellow fever issue around the Iguazu area. Anyone know how serious the problem is for us? Just debating the $200 vaccination here in NYC. I'm sure it's worth it, just want to hear the real story from someone down there. Thank you! |

although you're probably not going to get yellow fever, you may not be allowed into brazil without proof of the vaccination. if you are leaving tomorrow and going to iguazu in two weeks, that means you'll be somewhere else beforehand, either argentina or brazil. i'd recommend getting the vaccine there where it will be much less expensive.
as for the visa, you will rarely be checked. if you think it's an issue, you can just get off just after the bridge and walk past the immigration. i've walked through and taken a van through many times and i am an US citizen w/o a paraguay visa. worst case scenario, you can slip the control guy a few bucks.

Yellow Fever is perishing some dozens brazilians. So government is concerned with vaccine and ill confining. Yellow Fever is caused by the Aedes Aegepty mosquito that was brought in to Brazil few years ago. Goias State is more harshly reached but mosquitoes spread by winds. The neighbouring brazilians states try to vaccine people and keep healthiness under control.

When I was in Brazil (2002) the only border I crossed where yellow fever was an issue was between the state of Rondonia in Brazilian Amazonia and Beni in Bolivia; you could cross to Bolivia without problem but a certificate of vaccination was required to return to Brazil. Iguacu was not affected (crossed the different borders various times) and I don't think that area is generally bothered by the disease so much as the north.
You can get free vaccinations at airports in Brazil where you will be issued with a certificate. I had mine done in Salvador, not a yellow fever spot so I imagine supplies are readily available everywhere. But do try to find out from a doctor whether this is still the case if possible. I'd see a doctor before you go anywhere where there are serious diseases in any case. The visa I don't know about - I was pursuaded by my taxi driver guide just to walk over to Paraguay. I wouldn't have done it if I wasn't with a local though, so I'm not recommending it!

Hey there. If you`re an American citizen, you must have the Yellow Fever vaccine to enter Brazil. Since you also need it for the mandatory visa to enter, I`m guessing you don`t have the visa yet. I got mine ahead of time, but have heard you can also get it at the consulate in Buenos Aires. It will cost $130 :(
