Not far from La Antigua is the market town of Chichicastenango where on Saturdays a huge exuberant local market takes place - here you'll find fantastic wood carvings done mostly by indigenous indians at very inexpensive price. Don't miss it. Antigua has a good market as well but quite pricey and rather limited in terms of wood carving stuff. Also, if you do a leisurely stroll around the streets of La Antigua, you'd very likely happen upon groups of indigenous indians with their wood carvings simply spread out upon the street selling. Good luck.

Although there are vendors there on most days, the big market days in Chichi are Sunday and Thursday. Masks, figures, etc. There was one guy in the central plaza area who did the most beautiful carvings of angels. I wished now that I had purchased one. If in Antigua, check out Gigantes near the Iglesia de San Franciso on 7a Calle Oriente. They have quite a wide-range of crafts and some nice wood carvings that I didn't see elsewhere. We purchased a nice carving of St. Francis.

Sizes vary as does cost but you shouldn't have to spend too much money. Be sure to shop around and compare quality before purchasing.

Can't remember the costs but you'll easily find wood carvings of all sizes. I myself bought a small wood carving of a Crocodile and a Coati.
