Roseville is in the area known as Upper North Shore, maybe 10km from Sydney city. I can't remember there being a hotel in Roseville, but the local pubs may rent rooms. You could stay nearer the city because it has a rail station and Shirley Road starts close to the station. The neighbouring suburb of Chatswood, for example, has hotels.
The train is the North Shore Line and takes you into Sydney city. The biggest shopping centre on the way is Chatswood. July is mid-winter, although it could be blue sky and sunny, with daytime temperature up to around 17C or 18C and night time down to maybe 6C or 7C.

Roseville is a lovely area of Sydney, very safe, pretty (leafy, tree lined streets) and decent with lots of choices of quality (and reasonably priced) restaurants close by; particularly just a short distance to the south is the subaurb of Chatswood, where there are many options for eating and shopping. Shirley Street is not that far from the main arterial road called Pacific Highway, where most of the shops and restaurants are located. There are a number of hotels in Chatswood; some websites that might help are wotif.com, travel.com.au, or just Google away.As for what to do, there are the Melody Markets every Thursday in Chatswood Mall; there is the Kuringai National Park to take a walk or two; or check out the prime ministers house at Kirribilli. Just taking a walk around Lane Cove will give you an insight into some of the expensive home of the North Shore. Good luck and enjoy.
