| Hobart | Re: Questions on trip to Tasmania Posted: Wed February 27, 2008 03:28 PM UTC
Hi all,
Hope to ask some advice from everyone here. I am planning a trip to Tasmania in April this year. From my internet research, the following is my proposed itinery: Day 1 – 2 Hobart Mount Wellington Salamanca Market Day 3 Port Arthur Day 4 Cradle Mountain Day 5 Strahan Gordon River Queenstown Day 6 - 7 Laucheston Day 8 Wine Glass Bay Day 9 Back to Hobart May I ask if the plans above are too ambitious? Or too relaxed? Are there any 'must go' attractions that I missed out? Would you have any recommended motels to stay at the various locations? Any good restaurants to dine at? Also, I would like to know if its cheaper to rent a car in Tasmania or Melborne? Cheers. |

Hi there, would it probably better to visit Port Arthur after Wine Glass Bay, i suppose. Are u gonna visit Cradle Mountain Nat. Park from Lake St. Clare, are u? In this case you'll probably have more time visiting Port Arthur before coming back to Hobart. It's also a quite long trip from Launcheston to Wine Glass Bay, because then you'll need some time to walk and visit the national park, so you could leave Laucheston in the second day on afternoon, visit Bay of Fire and stay overnight in St. Helens, then move in the early morning to Wine Glass Bay.
Hope would helpful. Roberto

I would be quite a long drive from Port authur to Cradle mountain, I would suggest staying overnight at cradle mountain and spending a day there beofre driving to Launceston or go to Launceston first.

Thanks so much for your kind advice.
May I know how about accomodations? Any good motels to recommend at each of these locations? Also, how about car rental? Assuming I'm going for a 2L sedan, how much would I have to pay per day? Would it be cheaper to rent from Melborne? Thank you. Cheers!

Yep agree I have done a similar trip in Tassie, It is quite a drive from Strahan to Launceston. Also watch out for snow in the Cradle Mountain area, we actually got snowed in Late September so i imagine that April is not out of the question either. I would say that you will be moving fairly quickly to get all this done.
Hope this helps Matt

Oh forgot to say have a look here for car hire, I rented straight from Launceston and prices were fine.
There are countless great restaurants, in my humble opinion, the food is one of the highlights of tasmania. http://pleasetakemeto.com/australia/tasmania/tasma
