BRIGHTON - CITY INFO & WHERE TO LIVE??
Posted: Fri September 26, 2003 08:23 AM UTC
Hi! After living abroad for 8 years, I am moving to Brighton next weekend to study a postgraduate course for a year. As you can imagine I don't have know much about the city or have a clue where to live. I am going to Sussex Uni, where is a good area to live. Do you know of any student rooms available till next June?? Or people I can contact (difficult from abroad!)
Where is the centre of the city? Where are the good internet cafes so I can keep up with my VT pages??
Hope to hear from you soon, I arrive next Saturday evening (4th) and hope to arrive with an idea about the place.
Thanx, Mel :-)

First of all, since you are doing a post-grad the university should give you a room in campus!!
They should have halls of residence for the students. Why don't you e-mail or call them and ask about that option??!!
As for the city a have no clue....
You can still have internet in the university where is free of charge for all the students, so don't worry about internet cafes

Thats all I know about the student part of your question.

As for Brighton... I believe the title of a programm called "Brighton Rocks!!! " says it all.
It is one of the liveliest places to live and the second more expensive city in Britain after London (45 min London-Brighton )

Best of luck in your studies and your stay in England!

Julia

Thanx, unfortunately post-grad students who are doing a taught course don't get university accommodation. Thanks for the other info though, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the city has to offer.

Hi mel
I live in Brighton but I'm not a student so I'm not that up on student accomodation. THe uni must be able to help you in some way, if only to point you to an agency. I do know it's going to be expensive tho - sorry! Your best bet is to look in the The Argus (newspaper) property section - the website is www.thisisbrightonandhove.co.uk and you can browse the rental listings. Good luck! btw, do email me at my VT address if you need any other help when you're here.
cheers

oh yeah, for interent cafes, there are a couple on preston road but the best one is a chain called Interent Junction which has loyalty cards etc - branches in Kemptown and on western road opposite the Temple Bar pub.

Try These; www.tourism.brighton.co.uk
www.brighton.co.uk
www.searchuno.co.uk Also contact Lynne13 on the VT site, she lives and works in Brighton and is a good resource. (good friend too) I grew up in Brighton and visited twice this year - feel free to ask.
Its best to share a flat with friends as the cost of accomodation can be expensive. The language schools in Brighton also have accomodation available in the form of b @ b's in private homes. At last count there were at least 29 English language schools in Brighton and Hove.

Univ. of Sussex @ www.sussex.ac.uk Without a student card all buses are £1.20 or £2.40 per day unlimited travel within Brighton area. The clock tower is the most central point in Brighton. The railway station is north of here on Queens rd. The railway will take you to Falmer station close to the SU. Buses are the best bet.

Internet cafes: cheap ones are Komedia (above the restaurant) which is £1.50 an hour. Can get very crowded though. better option is the Internet Junction on Western Rd 9just past Waitrose).

if you take a look at my homepage hopefully there might be some useful info for you.

One of the best places to find rooms is on the notice board in the window of a health food shop called Infinitiy Foods in the North Lanes.( 25 North Rd)

this probably wont help you though

good luck
