| Ko Samui | Info please...... Posted: Tue February 26, 2008 03:01 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
We're going to Ko Samui as part of our honeymoon in a couple of weeks. We're staying at a Bophut resort. Can anyone advise what the best way to get around the island is? Is it the same as other parts of Thailand - tuk tuk?? Also we want to see the Big Buddha and the famous rocks while we're there, are they far from Bophut where we're staying? Cheers Rach : ) |

If I remember correctly the big buddha and those rude rocks are just up the beach at bophut, its over 20 yrs since I was there but I doubt if they have been moved.

I recommend if your game to hire yourself a motor bike. My girlfriend and i did for 4 US dollars a day. We spent one day riding around the whole island and visiting beach's, the big buddha and lookout points. Was really fun but remember sun screen! The roads aren't to scary becase you just stick to the side of the road and let the cars go by and in towns the traffic is slow enough to not be scary. Otherwise tuk tuk, taxi's or on the back of motor bikes.

The famous rocks are in Lamai whereas Big Buddha is in Bang Rak. They are quite a distance from each other.
If you intend to hire a tuk tuk for a day, it will cost you about 1,500 to 1,800 baht a day. However, if you are up to it, you can hire a motorbike and go round the island yourself. Motorbike rentals are about 150baht to 300 baht a day (depending on whether it is manual or automatic and also on the season in which are you coming here). However, do note that it is also very dangerous and the road conditions are not the same as back in your home. You have to be very careful and insist on the helmets as well. (Take note that Ko Samui has the highest death accidents by motorbike). Another choice is travelling by rental jeep. The cost is about 900 to 1500 baht a day. This depends on the season and of course, the shop that you rent it from. Also take note that motorbike rentals are without insurance whereas jeep rentals are normally inclusive of insurance.

We have just come back from samui and we did a "Round the island Tour " for 6 hours and it cost us each 450 bt,,,,,was well worth it as we travelled in airconditioned bus to see the Grandmother/father rocks, the Mummified Monk, the Big Buddah, a monkey show( monkey climbing coconut tree to take the coconuts down)Nathon town(cheap shopping)Wat Leam Suwanarm and the Namung Waterfall. We could have hired a scooter to do this but for the price you cant go wrong. When you are there, get a taxi to the Samui Aquarium, worth a look and you can get your photo taken with a bengal tiger. We didnt hire a scooter on Samui as its quite dangerous altho we did on Ko Phangan as its not so busy there.Samui is bigger than it looks, from Bophut to Lamai its about 25 minutes by car.
Have a great time !!

I have just come back from Koh Samui and my hubbie and I hired a bike for the day and it was good fun. I admit I was a bit worried, having been told by a VT member that it's quite dangerous. The locals living on this island are so polite and courteous on the roads, and they also drive allot slower than back home! Nobody got road rage at all!! As long as your sensible it's a great way to get about the island. We hired a bike for 300 baht for the day, but that was from our hotel, over the road we found out later it was 200!
Anyway have a great time in Koh Samui and hope you get to see everything. From Sue
