| Bremen | Best Value Rail Ticket, Beer, Food, etc. Posted: Tue February 26, 2008 12:29 AM UTC
I will be staying in Bremen from 17th to 22nd April.
I have started doing my research. I now realise there is no chance of seeing Werder play, due to the German Cup Final having been arranged for the 19th April and all Bundesliga games cancelled. I now realise also that it was tricky getting hotel room over the weekend, because Bremen is hosting its 'jazzahead' festival. I'm sure I'll find plenty to do in Bremen and Bremerhaven. But if I did fancy a day's excursion to Hamburg, can someone confirm that the cheapest ticket for a single-traveller to buy would be 'Das Niedersachsen-Ticket Single'? My German is not that bad (honest!) - but the relevant DB web page is only available in German and is pretty complex. Any other tips on Bremen would be much appreciated. I enjoy my beer. Any recommendations, other than Becks? And local food specialities? Finally, as a supporter of a 'smaller' Scottish team (Motherwell - the club that once sold Paul Lambert to Borussia Dortmund) may I just say 'Good Luck' to Werder in the next round of the EUFA Cup against Rangers. |

Yes, the Niedersachsen-Ticket will be your best choice. It is valid from Monday to Friday however only after 9:00 am when the rush hour is over. On Saturdays and Sundays there is no restriction. And you can use it till 3:00 am of the following day.
Costs are 27 Euro for a group up to five persons. A single ticket costs 19 Euro. You only can use local and regional trains with this ticket (no trains with the attributes ICE, IC, EC or D). For tips on Bremen feel free to visit my Bremen page on VT.

The Niedersachsen-Ticket is also valid on public transport in Hamburg, which is a plus.

Other than Beck's, the only beer from Bremen would be "Haake Beck", which I think is worse.
As for food specialities, winter will be over, hence "Kohl & Pinkel", THE speciality from Bremen is a no-go, as it's an absolute winter dish. One speciality Bremen shares with Hamburg is called "Labskaus", a typical sailor's meal. I'm not going to recommend it. You could try to find "Bremer Klaben" at a bakery, but being similar to Dresden's Christstollen (only heavier and about as expensive), you'll be a little late here as well. "Wickelkuchen" is a lot sweeter and served around the year, it's nothing special, though.
