it sounds that you may need a budget hotel. Our friend Dora is always recommending Garden City one. Cleopatra hotel in Tahreer square is also cheap.
there are two in Dokki where you can use Metro. There is one very cheap in Taha hussein street in zamalek.... but all are budget ones

Hi. Rosegirl,
Seems you have missed me! I stayed at the Garden City House Hotel from a week ago. Just arrived home the day before yesterday. Might be that it seems dark to you. It is a hotel that breaths the air of the turn of the 19th century,a little later perhaps. 1930'ies. It is on the third and fourth flour of an appartement building. The entrance breathes the grandeur of the 30ies with a great staircase going up and an elevator with wooden cabin. It is cheap, it has rooms with bathroom, airco and without, views on the Nile or Tahrir Square or buildings in between. It is kind of dusty, but it is cheap and perfect in location. Once it was the most popular place of archeologists digging the grounds around Cairo and still archeology student groups are staying there. Less then 20 USD a night including breakfast. Views on the Nile, less than 5 minutes walk to the Museum, Tahrir Square with Sadat Metro station just behind, Restaurants, cafe's, shops just across Tahrir Square. I think if Don is looking for a budget hotel in down town Cairo: This is the place!
