I've read about guided tours going to Hill Top Farm, but looking at a map it doesn't seem to be too far from Kendal.
I'm thinking of taking a train in the early afternoon, from Kendal to Windermere, walking to the ferry, crossing the lake, then walking up to Hill Top Farm.Do you think this is walkable? I'd have to go back the same way in the evening.

I guess it is walkable but it's quite a long way from the ferry. Take a look at the following link which advises you best way of getting there. I am a National Trust member but haven't actually been inside Hill Top Farm so couldn't tell you what it is like, Darren.

Hilltop farm is very Sawley Village and is about 2.5 miles from the ferry (each way)maybe it's better to arrive Windermere mid-morning and have extra time to see the farm and teashop in Sawley.
Enjoy the walk, we did it two years ago.

Thank you both for your information. 2 miles or 2.5 miles are not too much, so I think I'll walk to Hill Top Farm.
