Malta Less touristy areas & internetconnectivity queies
Posted: Mon February 25, 2008 02:17 PM UTC
Hi. My husband & I will be travelling to Malta in APril (from South Africa). We prefer to stay away from the main tourist areas & being close to the sea is not essential. We prefer to stay in a small village and experience ife as the locals live it rather that as the tourists in the resorts. Can anyone suggest a suitable village(somewhere central from where we can explore the rest of the island). Unfortunately it is important fo us to be near a wifi hotspot or have accommodation with broadband access as we do need to keep in touch with our company while away. Any recommendations of places to stay. Self-catering (in an apartment or villa will be best). PLease suggest a good location as well as good acommodation if possible. Thanks Janet

Can't help with accommodation specifics, but wireless hotspots here:

http://www.hotspot-locations.com/modules.php?op=hotspot_query&name=HotSpots&hsl_countryhs=MT&hs_state=&hs_city=&hs_operator=&hsl_type=&hs_access_box=&hs_roaming=&externalquery=&backFrom=0&back=%3C%3C

Sorry it's such a long link!

Malta is really very small, so anywhere is 'central'. The public bus system is extremely efficient, giving good coverage of the whole island. Malta derives much of its income from tourism, second, 'holiday' homes and there is also a large British ex-pat community, so you should expect that even small villages will have some element of this aspect.

If you mean you could not access the link I posted, try:

http://www.wi-fihotspotsdirectory.com/Wi-Fi-Hotspots-In-Malta-132.html

or

http://www.hotspot-locations.com/modules.php?name=HotSpots&op=hotspot_query&hs_operator=1079

Or just google 'malta wireless hotspots' which will bring up the same type of results.

How long will you be here for? If you want somewhere peaceful and quiet with typical village life, then i would suggest renting a farmhouse in gozo. (google gozo farmhouses for a large selection of accomodation). If you don't want to go to gozo then try search for a farmhouse in malta to experience the village life - however these tend to have a minimum booking of at least 1 week usually - and they're not the cheapest of accomodation. With regards to internet access, I highly doubt these farmhouses will have -you'd have to try a hotel to get wi-fi. But otherwise we have many internet cafes around - or you could take your laptop down to Burger King who i know have wi-fi for sure!! :)

hope that was helpful!!
