Cairo One day in Cairo (except museum and pyramides)
Posted: Mon February 25, 2008 01:15 PM UTC
Hi everyone!

What do you recommend for a day in Cairo?

By then, I will have seen the pyramides and the cairo museum, so what do you suggest for an extra day?

I heard about the copta neighborhood, about the muslim neighborhood..?

I don't really know much, to be honest. Are there any bazaars, tiny alleys, markets, fruits, colours, echos of the past..?

Where?

Thanks!

Luis

p.s.: Is a group of people walking around gonna be harassed by touts/guides/salesmen...??

Hi,
You could go up to the Citadel, from there about a km to the blue mosque and a further km to the Kahn Al Khalili district where you have the bazaars and markets.

I also suggest the Citadel, there is plenty to see and do there. It is steeped in history so this will aide you with the echos from the past and there are numerous museums also located there to walk around. You will also get an excellent view of old Cairo.

For the bizarres, Khan el khalili is the most visited and is excellent for meandering off down litle side streets...

At khan el khalili you will get a lot of attention as you are a buyer in a sellers haven!!! but on the main streets you may encounter sellers but Cairo is pretty tame in comparison to other cities in Egypt. Just keep smiling :)

i must agree with previous comments.. the Citadel deserves to be seen.. (by the way, you will see a huge cemetery near it, where also hundreds of people live: the city of the dead)
khan el khalili is a must to see.. to walk along the narrow alleys and streets, the real Zouk as it was hundred of years ago.. a stop at fishawi cafe, to drink mint tea and smoke a shisha..(water pipe_)........near it, two big mosques, al Hussein and al Azhar, the eldest university...

i just come back from egypt last week.. if you want to ask em anything.. i will answer you with much pleasure..
