To find information about your destination visit the website www.glarusnet.ch
The first page is in German only, but if you click the button Tourismus you will find that there are also pages in English. About the flights, Zuerich seems to be the nearest international airport, so with your travel agent or on the internet you need to look for flights to Zuerich.

The website of Zuerich airport is this: www.uniqueairport.com
In Switzerland you should consider the possibility of travelling by train. There are railways really everywhere. There are even villages where you cannot get by car because there is no road, but there is a tran going there.

Hi,
The official website of Tourism Switzerland is www.myswitzerland.com on the top right corner you can choose the language. You will have to fly to Zurich. Trains and postbuses cover just about any village in Switzerland. There are special train passes for tourists. You can buy them upon arrival with your credit card. As US citicen you don't need a visa for a holiday. Enjoy your planning.

Hi!
I know the canton of Glarus a bit, as I was in an army section (high Alpine troups and artillery of forticfications, which have been closed down meanwhile) and passed my services till the age of 42 there. If you need a rather cheap hotel, tell me, I can find out. There is a youth hostel in Braunwald only, in Glarus you might stay at the budget Sternen, or plus chic: Glarnerhof (058 640 11 97). If you want to see Switzerland, you should stay in some cottages of the SAC, in the high Alps. I could give you suggestions, too. Sometimes, it would be helpful to have a car, let's take the canton of Glarus: many places are difficult to reach without private transport. I like the Klausen pass road, but also the Pragel pass. There is so much to tell that I can't finish here. If you want to have a chat, I am with yahoo-messenger: name_of_rain As for the Freuler palace, it is only open from April to November (612 13 78). If you come here, I can give you more hints. Or I could show you some places, on foot or by car. swissrain The Freuler

The relative poverty of Swizterland urged people to make money abroad, which brought about that Swiss signed up as mercenaries for the foreign superpowers of the time, then Milano and France. Some made a fortune there as commanders, such as the Freuler family, who could build a palace such as only noble families abroad could afford. Freuler palace, builit in 1645, is an example.
After Switzerland became the first European state to be a modern democracy in 1848, it was forbidden to serve in foreign armies, except the Vatican. As a consequence, many Swiss from the most impoverished areas emmigrated into the new world, especially Glarus and Ticino people during the famines. It became so drastic that the government had to forbid emmigration, too! Some still became mercenaries, in the 20th century especially in the foreign Legion of France. But it was only in this century that Switzerland developped a modern industry and efficient banking so that Switzerland now is (still...) relatively well off.

Thanks for your interesting answer. I find it very interesting but lots of Swiss people also emigrated to Russia in the 1800's as in my family history.
Funny, how one finds out more about the own country's history on VT :-))

How generous you are to offer so much information to us. We really are not "up to speed" on the requested info., although we are truely interested in learning more. We have been so busy.... It is one of our dreams, to travel to Switzerland. My husband's family lineage(Freuler) originates in Glarus, and it would be awesome to come there. Much gratitude! Cathy Freuler
