You may want to try the forums on the Lonely Planet. The travellers there are more likely to have experience in Kazakhstan.

It is a huge country, with a lot to see. Turkestan is probably the most historic city....And I would definately recomend you take only trains. And get the open seating tickets, rather than first class. The people in Kazakhstan are amazing. They warm, caring, very giving........your train experiences will be your highlight of the trip. But aways bring a bit of food to share with the other passengers......because they will always share what they have. And it is a good idea to bring tea, and mugs for the ride. Their is free hot water on all of the trains. have a good trip.

We were staying with friends in Almaty so didn't have to arrange our own transport whilst we were there but I can highly recommend a trip out to see the petroglyphs at Tamgaly Tas, they are fantastic. You should be able to orgaize a visit there once you reach Almaty.

To get to Medeo - the popular recreation area in the mountains just outside Almaty, take the No 6 bus or one marked "Medeo" from opposite the Hotel Kazakhstan on Dostyk Street. They run all day with the last bus returning at 2200. From there you should try to get up to Chimbulak - it's a 3-4 hour hike.

The gorge leading up to Big Almaty (Bolshoe Almatinskoe) Lake starts just 15km outside Almaty. You can catch a bus to the village village (Kok-shoky) near the entrance to the gorge and from there it is a long hike up to the lake - a good 5-6 hours.

I wish we'd had time to see more of Kazakhstan - have a great trip
