Hi,
Just wondering is there a direct bus or train from zagreb to novi sad? I looked on the web but can't find anything for sure. Looks like I have to get a connection. Is this true? thanks Brian |

I posted a very long and somewhat self-mocking answer on the other thread. Unfortunately Central European railways are pretty bad to provide user-friendly info.
The scoop: 1) you need to change trains 48 km south of Novi Sad at Stara Pazova 2) here is your entire schedule: http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/1800/picture22zb3.png 3) The domestic tickets are much cheaper, you should buy Zagreb-Tovarnik express train ticket for 121.30 Kn 4) The through international ticket Zagreb-Stara Pazova-Novi Sad is 29.12 Euro plus/minus few cents, I would not buy it but if you may feel for your "peace of mind", you can buy it. The r/t ticket should be in theory 41.6 Euro, not 58.24 Euro. 5) You can use any train, these tickets are valid 2 month

Hey those serbian and croatian sites still make more sense to me than most irish bus and rail links...lol. Thanks for the links. Hey by the way do you know of any useful sites which could help explain the basic cyrillic alphabet to me.

uh-oh, sorry, I don't know. I had a spare Russian mom at the age of 0-6... and some brutal literature and grammar teachers in the Elementary. I know, not all can have this kind of help... but in retrospect the pain paid off.
Pupulainen will be of a great help, I never confronted myself really. For pure writing one of the most useful for me is the www.translit.ru, they use all East Slavic characters. The Southern Slavonic has few differences, I just store them somewhere and grab if I need. I got recently a link like this - but it's the on-line dictionary (if I am lazy to think what it could mean) and it will unfortunately translate to latin script only: http://www.krstarica.com/recnik/

One more thing: sadly, nothing Cyrillic, Chinese, Thai, etc. will work on VT yet and even some of the South European/Central/East European characters have issues, don't even try.
You will get somewhat like this: чёрт возь&#

Back to the original question:
Trains between Zagreb and Belgrade DO NOT pass through Novi Sad. You need to change trains, and from what I see on www.bahn.de most trains take more than 7 hours. (That is, if the train is on time - and Serbian trains are notorious for being almost always late). There are direct buses from Zagreb to Novi Sad, the ride takes 6 hours and I would definitely use that option. Timetables at www.akz.hr/vr/voznired.aspx
