| Durban | Durban weekend w/o a car? Posted: Sat February 23, 2008 01:51 PM UTC
I'll be flying into Durban for the weekend of March 15/16, staying at a guest house in Musgrave. I was not planning to rent a car for this visit, since it just seems like more trouble than it's worth for such a short stay.
With no car, what kinds of activities could I think about for Saturday? I have read tons of VT tips, but I'm not sure what would be appropriate. The aquarium is a possibility, but I prefer to do more outdoor, wandering-around type stuff. Are there cool areas of Durban that I could grab a cab to and just walk around and sightsee? The Botanical Garden sounds interesting, but I don't know where it is or if I can get there with no car. Also--it seems like I am getting there in the height of the rainy season. Should I be expecting massive rain on these days? If so I might just stay in my room! :-) |

if you are staying in the Musgrave area i would reccomend a car. it is the height of summer and the temperature will be in the low 30 degrees with very high humidity, its far too hot to do any serious walking. you should pay a visit to Ushaka marine world, as it has shops restaurants a waterworld, aquarium and its right on the beach, so walking along the beach is good, the ocean is warm in Durban and perfect for swimming. The botanic gardens is a good place to walk around although i find it a bit boring (plants aint my thing) you can go to movies at musgrave shopping centre and you MUST eat at spiga d'oro in Florida road, great food and atmosphere and very reasonably priced. Mitchell park is in tat area its a beautiful park with lots of caged birds and a small zoo with small animals and crocodiles, there are beautiful plants there and a restaurant/tea garden, its well worth a visit. if it does rain at this time of the year its usually only a short sharp shower with a bit of lightning, usually in the late afternoon. it doesnt normally rain for days like it does in Capetown.

Thanks for that! I will remember the restaurant--sounds great. I presume I can get taxis to places, though? It would be tricky for me to get a car--I will be flying in on Friday and doing business meetings all day, with a driver, so no opportunity to get the car in the first place.

for your own personal safety if you are walking just dont wear flashy jewellery and dont act like a tourist flashing expensive cameras and money around.and dont walk alone at night
taxis are very expensive, insist on the driver using the meter. i think you would be better off with a car
