| Beijing | Beijing side trip to Datong Posted: Sat February 23, 2008 02:14 AM UTC
Does anyone know about the new airport in Datong? Is it easy to do an overnight in Datong, see the sights (like the Hanging Monastery) and fly back to Beijing the next day? I am looking to go outside of Beijing for a day, since I saw the major sights the first time I was there and I know there are other old cities to see.

Take the overnight train. We did Datong in a day and continued our journey by train. It was very quick but quite doable. I have to admit it was -25 celsius so it wasn't really the time of year to linger either. The positive side of the cold was that the hanging monastery was completely deserted by tourists.... (though we weren't so lucky when we went to the buddha caves).

Sounds fine, or you could just take a bus for about 4 hours each way.
Another option you might want to consider (probably in conjunction) would be Pingyao.

Pingyao is very nice. Good suggestion!

Thank you both. I think the bus with an overnight stay there is doable, and then catch a bus back in the morning. I will definitely leave an extra day from Beijing to do that.
