You will definitely need a guide if it's your first time to go and if you're touring southern Batan island. I was there during the Holy Week. Some people hire a tricycle and sets an agreed price w/ the driver to be with them a number of hours. You can do this if you're going to places near the city like Naidi Hills or the Basco lighthouse, but not for towns like Mahatao, Ivanna, Songsong etc. Sometimes the guide will also serve as your driver as well.

I would hire one. Guides know the places and the PEOPLE. Like in our case we were able to get inside Secretary Abad's home, tour inside. Visit the kitchen of Fundacion de Pacita where the late artist had her works on plates were. Guides would point you to interesting mountains resembling a sleeping lady . Borrow old things from the local like their "vakul" or headgear. The place has no map. Guides would definitely be helpful.
