| Saint Petersburg | Train or bus from Riga to St. Petersburg Posted: Thu February 21, 2008 12:30 PM UTC
Hey everyone,
I'd like to travel from Riga to St. Petersburg (and back) but haven't decided yet whether to take the bus or the train. Does anone know how much both are? Is it safer to take the bus or the train? Is the bus much less comfortable? Do I have to get a ticket for either a day in advance or can I get a ticket the morning I leave Riga? Thanks a lot for your help, Tatjana |

Definitely, the train is more convenient - even sitting places, though it goes at night - like the only bus in this direction.
Insurance of your camera is probably not worth spending - as to get a sign from local police proving the stealing will be another torture and time waisting...

Hey,
thanks for your answer. Do you think traveling by train is safe enough for a single woman? Thanks a lot

I once took the train from StP to Riga and travelled in kupe (4 person compartment) and I shared with a nice couple from Norilsk but the man really stank of alhohol. The train also has the cheaper "Platzkartni" carriages.
Another time I took the day bus from Riga to Pskov but this bus actually went to StP. At the time there were two companies do the run, I think I took ecolines and there was eurolines for the night run. I bought the ticket the day before and my bus was almost empty. I guess it depends whether school holidays or other public holidays are on or not.
