Basically, no.

Bus to Sorrento (about an hour), then Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii (about half an hour).

Lots of trains, quite a lot of buses.

http://www.vesuviana.it/ for train times

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/OrariCampania for buses (scroll down to Quadro 14)

The bus route follows the Amalfi coast road, so it's a brilliant experience in itself.

You might be able to get an organised tour locally, depending on when you go, but it will be more expensive (and you'll probably get less time in Pompeii that way too).

ha,
good job J for knowing the SITA website. good luck, they are a mysterious puzzle.
easiest would be to take the circumvesuviano to Sorrento and then SITA bus to positano from there. any bus going to Amalfi will drop you in positano. take care not to get off at the first positano stop as it's quite a bit above the town. the last stop is probably the most convenient.

No train. Car rental is probably your best option, find a driver is #2 option, don't know if there would be a bus. - I would contact where you are staying in Positano and ask for help. Alternatively, go on www.vrbo.com and find a rental positing with a local Italian contact in either Positano or Sorrento - call that person and see if they can offer you suggestions. While they may be annoyed that you are not calling about their specific property, if you are nice about it, maybe they will help you out.

Can't see the point in hiring a car: buses and trains are frequent and far easier. If you drive the Amalfi coast road yourself you'll see absolutely nothing at all of the superb views: let the experienced bus driver take the strain!

I'm not sure if you are asking about the trip from Positano to Pompeii, or the other way round. But if you are asking about visiting Pompeii from Positano, then just get an earlyish bus (around 9am, or earlier if you want) then get off at Sorrento and walk straight into the Circumvesuviana station, buy your ticket and get on the next train to Pompeii (around 30 minutes). The excavations are directly opposite the station entrance. If you leave at 9 you'll be there by late morning, with all afternoon to explore.
