i have read pro/cons of these rides , but my wife has hip/knee replacement and is limited in her walking so, we are interested . what is the protocal for hiring the h/c ride? need to do in advance ? do it thru hotel ? ( plan to stay @ moevenpick resort@ the entrance. i heard the one needs a special permit @ the visit center for a fee. or does one just go early to negotiate a ride and price with th driver? and for how long? many questions. help. thanks, minoru terada

My understanding is that there are always plenty of these services available at the entrance.
Mövenpick is the best choice there, we also stayed there.

oh boy as soon as you get there everyone wants to get you on a horse or donkey. you shouldn't have a problem at all finding one. we didn't ride a hrose or donkey but you should be able to ask for it at the desk. Your hotel will be able to help you too. You're going to love Petra. It's gorgeous!!!

No need to make any arrangements beforehand, you will have no problems getting a horse and carriage once you arrive at the entrance. A friend travelling with us with a recent knee replacement used one and said it was absolutely the answer. Prices are set by the tourist authorities, so you you don't need to worry about negotiating. The price includes the return so you should set a time for your driver to be waiting for you back at the entrance to the Siq at the conclusion of your visit.
However, the carriages can only travel through the Siq to the area in front of the Treasurury - you can't use them to get around the valley itself. The valley and the ruins cover a very large area so you might like to consider hiring a donkey for the day. The donkey guys are very helpful. If you have a guide for your visit, he will do all the arranging of this for you. leyle
