| Livorno | Livorno - Fit Pisa and Tuscany all in one day? Posted: Wed February 20, 2008 02:28 PM UTC
My Husband and I are going on a cruise in mid June and one of the stops is Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Italy. We would love to see Pisa, but there is an excursion that really has caught our eye. It is a 4 hour excursion starting at 1:15 p.m. You travel through the Tuscan countryside and visit a small vineyard that produces wine. They give you a tour, show you how it is made, and then have a wonderful wine tasting. I have always wanted to do something like this. We have from 7:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. to do whatever we want while in Livorno. Anyways, does anyone think that it is possible to visit Pisa in the morning and then be back in Livorno or near it to catch the Wine excursion at 1:15 p.m.??? How long/far would it be from Livorno to Pisa and then back again roundtrip?

Pisa is about 20 minuts away from Livorno, from train timetables:www.trenitalia.com

And, of course, in a couple of hour you won't see all Pisa. But the most famous things (the tower, and the stunning bulding all around the square).. yes. You can have a quick idea, and be back for your excursion.
Maybe a cheap rental car (or scooter) would help... But takes time to take it, and to give it back... Just an idea... Ciao Francesco

Well, it's possible. To save time take a cab as you exit the harbour (you have to know at which dock you arrive, so you can view on google maps how far you are).
As Corra said there are many trains to Pisa (15' ride). From Pisa Station the leaning tower is 2km away, I suggest to take a cab again. It saves time and, as Francesco said, what is worth to be seen is just around the tower. I guess that you have to consider at least 1hr each way (15' wandering leaving the boat + 10' to reach Livorno station + 10' waiting train + 15' train trip + 10' taxi ride to the leaning tower). This means that you have at least 3hr and half to enjoy Pisa! Have a nice trip. Ciao marco

Just my opinion, but the Field of Miracles which houses the Leaning Tower is a quick in and out - it is worth seeeing, but not at the expense of making it a trek - i always say you go to italy so you can go back. So while you may enjoy it, you may be a bit disappointed if you have to go thru a great deal to see it - like going to Montecello - worth seeing but if there is a lot on your plate - then oh well. You will enjoy Livorno, and if the wine tour is something you always wanted to do, then you will have a great trip minus Pisa

Might be a good idea to do a price comparison. You could engage a tour guide/driver for a whole day and he could take you to Pisa and to more than one vineyard for a visit of the kind you describe. Having your own driver provides a lot of flexibility and a licensed tour drive can take you right into the centre of Pisa. I can strongly recommend Giovanni Sirabella - he specialises in shore excursions from Livorno cruise ships. Ask him for a quote and then do your sums: http://www.sunflower-tours.com
