Whistler Car rental question from Seattle to Whistler
Posted: Wed February 20, 2008 12:20 PM UTC
Has anyone rented a car at Seattle and drove to Whistler? I understand that some car rental companies may not permit rentals to be taken either into Canada, or as far as Whistler. I currently hold several reservations with a few companies, one, I forget which, states that rentals if taken to Canada can only be taken as far as Vancouver. So I was wondering, does anyone know which car rental companies in Seattle permit their rental cars to be taken as far as Whistler? Or, which companies forbid taking their cars across the border? Has this even been a concern to anyone? Thank you for your help.

Why don't you call the 800 number which will cost you nothing and ask the car rental companies you have booked with. Simple, and you get the correct information right from the "horse's mouth"

A while back, after I already booked to Seattle, I think I read somewhere to make sure I book with a car company that permits entry to Canada. I looked at one of my car rental reservations, Dollar, and in the "fine" print of the reservation, states that cars drive to Canada can be taken only to Victoria, or Vancouver and Vancouver metro areas. So I made a reservation with Alamo and called them. I tried calling a local number, and although I reached Alamo, I got some main office and they seemed to think it would not be a problem. But did state that Canadian citizens can not drive across into Canada. But this person didn't seem to be a person who dealt this this issue, so I figured I might not want to trust his judgement. So I was just wondering if anyone has recently rented a car, and driven across, to Whistler, without difficulties, or if someone knew otherewise. I will call the car rental agency again. I just figured it might be good to hear from someone who has experienced this situation. Thanks.

Alamo or National is probably your best bet. I have driven Alamo cars from Vancouver into the USA and you can take them anywhere, no restrictions. As far as what the person you were talking to was saying about Canadians, there is a law in Canada, a stupid law that says Canadians may only drive rental cars with a provincial license plate, so if a car in Seattle with BC plates was available, a Canadian could drive it into Canada no provincial plates then the Canadian would not be allowed to take it across the border into Canada.
