Province d' Ouarzazate Visiting Dades Valley and Gorge May 18-22

Does anyone know a good guide to use for seeing the really cool kasbahs, including the abandones ones in the Dades Valley. I really like hiking and exploring and wonder if it's acceptable for an american to be hiking around in the mountains around the kasbahs? I'm really interested in taking pictures as much as I can and love the Moroccan architecture. I was thinking of staying at Chez Pierre.

Hi
firsteval beeing american really it's not big deal .lot of americans travel around there and saw by my self 4 americans went into the desert for 7 days .
and morocans do not see any diference between peopl and from where they came . hiking around the mounts need a guide unless if you are well advnts ;am sur you will see the beautiful ksour and kasbas if you look at the right place cos a while i use to live there i use to visit families into kasbas and old ksour " peopl stil live there " i found out many subject need to be open ....and many things i never thowght it does exist.
the problem is that there are lot of duides offer thiers serv but some of them have no permission or the law do not allow to hung out with tourists....that's the law in morocco .may be some of travellers will advice you to contact the " tourisme office" but that won't work well as you want it .in fact some guides have papers but no knowldge.
the famous kasbas are " ait ben hadou and some old kasbas down ourzazat and in the south there are some beautiful architecture made by Jwfz .and others by the road made by berbers" but in that case a guide stil needed .
there is a chance to see more morocan architecture 25 kasbah or more in the south true sijilmassa .it look like a kingdoom of ksour
for any info !!contact !!i do keep many adresse .
don't forget to keep your eyes on your camara .
have fun

Definitely keep your camera close to you...journalist friend of mine who was out compiling Morocco travel guide for USA had all his equipment stolen from his car boot in Ouarzazate last year! If you are looking for a guide you can find several agencies in the main square in Ouarzazate...Let me know if you want personal recommendation.

The Dades Valley and Gorge area is one of my favourite and most recommended area and driving route - stunning area for walking and absolutely fantastic for photographing - ive taken many and when am there its hard to stop! Have a look at my pages - still not really got the best of what ive got or seen but its not a bad coverage so far - so please have a look at my pages on the Dades and Msemrir, Ouarzazate and Telouet - along with its side trips such as Anmiter and Fint.
theres a few relevant tips on my actual main page for Morocco and a little of my own love for architecture and examples of the amazing colours to be found around Morocco (and my favourite areas)also in my Marrakech page.

As you can see in my tips Ive recommend two auberges - Kasbah la Vallee and the Tissoudrine.

The Draa Valley is fantastic for kasbahs - but i love my Telouet favourite - which is a Glaoui kasbah as is the Taourirt one in Ouarzazate - theres one at Tamdaght near Ait Benhaddou and there are a few around Skoura which are well worth visiting which is along the Dades Valley as are the ones around Kelaa Mgouna a little further along the Dades Valley road getting close to Boumalne which is where the turn off is up to the Dades Gorge.

May is quite a lovely time to be around those areas - if you also like flora and lush looking vegetation - which is what is also lovely about the Dades Gorges road and the oasis valleys around the Dades Valley - the roses will be still be blooming - the ones not yet harvested (the rose festival is about the first week of May) and the pink oleanders which are quite prolific during their season around May and June.
All the best.
