Ulaanbaatar Travel Forum

I will be moving to Ulaanbaatar this summer with my wife Veronica and our 9 month old baby Eric. Does anyone have any information on how easy it is to get hold of baby stuff (powdered milk, nappies/diapers, winter clothes for babies, cribs, etc)? We will be travelling over from El Salvador, which is about as far from Mongolia as you can get. We will transport some things with us, but it will probably be expensive to bring any big items. Any info on what is available locally would be a big help.

As a local citizen of UB i'm sure that you have not to be worry about finding infant and baby stuff in UB. UB houses number of modern Hyper & Supermarkets that sell imported western & european quality stuff. I'm sure you can easily find stuff like diapers/nappies, clothes and cribs, with quite decent price (much more cheaper than those in European countries but same quality). But about the food stuff, especially canned ones, like powdered milk etc you should be careful, because some might be outdated because of importation. of course i'm not saying you cannot bue these items, but i'm saying that you have to be sure you choose right place to bue foodstuff. There are several nice clean supermarket, which equipped well to sell foodstuff and imports quality products, same time there exists offshore markets.

Thanks Khoso, that's a big help. I guessed that most stuff would be available, but its always hard to know these things when you have never been to a country. I had no idea what to expect when I first moved to El Salvador 9 years ago, but it turned out that there was virtually everything that you would expect to find in the US or Europe, except for a slightly smaller choice. Are there any specialist shops to look out for in UB like 'Babies R us' or equivalent?

i guess there is no big brand shops, specialize in baby stuff well known in outside world. But there are several shops, specialize in babies and children clothing & other stuff, who imports quality products.

BTW, i visited your page on birding, its nice. As you know, Mongolia is one of the birdwacher's paradises, i hope you have lot to see and study if you going to spend some time in Mongolia. Good luck

State Department Store or Ikh Delguur is a good choice where you can buy those stuff. Or, look for a shop called Baby Shop, somewhere near Tengis Movie Theater. There you can find clothes and other stuff. As Khoso said, there are plenty of shops and supermarkets out there that you can expect to find your needy stuff. Pampers brand is available in almost all shops. Pampers is imported by a German business here, so no doubt of its quality.
