Thanks for the tip about not driving. I will be coming from Warsaw in the fall for a day. Am I better off to take the train and deal with the gauge change at the border, or take a bus? Also, my great-grandfather emigrated to the United States from Hrodna in the late 19th century. Family legend has it that he worked on a czarist estate. Is there an old palace/castle in the area? Thank you so much.

Gauge change may be interested experience, but it takes time. But border pass faster, than buses. And check this resource http://globus.tut.by/grodno/index.htm - it on russian, but you may see picture

Just remember that there are no direct trains from Warsaw to Hrodna. You`ll have to change a train in Bialostock. Look at the timetables to plan in advance.
Taking a bus also consider that the border control waiting times for buses/cars can be crazy sometimes.
