| Oman | What should I wear Posted: Mon February 18, 2008 08:32 PM UTC
Hi,I am a not so spring chicken but lively traveller and I am visiting Oman for the first time and although I have been to Abu Dhabi and Dubai I know that the dress codes vary from Country to Country. I tend to wear mainly the knee length capri shorts with short sleeve tops. Will these be ok, can I wear jeans or do I need to buy some floor length skirts?

In Dubai people are used to a lot of foreigners, so you can get by with a lot more than elsewhere in the region. You may however find that you feel for comfortable with full-length pants and regular t-/polo shirts as the temperatures in malls tend to be freezing - I personally usually bring a sweater ! No need to wear skirts/dresses - jeans are fine.
In Oman people are more conservative, you definately should wear full-length pants or you will attract a lot of attention. Generally speaking, the way you dress is quite important in the ME - the better you dress the more likely people are to treat you with respect.

In my experience as a taxi driver, I don't think you need to worry about what you wear in Oman because I have seen many tourist and visitors to Oman wear what you mentioned in your question.
Enjoy your trip to Oman

Having just spent 2 weeks in Oman, I would strongly recommend either full length pants or a long skirt, especally outside Muscat. It is both a courtersy to Omani people as well as not attracting undue attention in more conservative rural areas.
