| Maui | Island hopping recommendations Posted: Mon February 18, 2008 05:51 PM UTC
One of my friends who visted Maui told me that it is pretty inexpensive to do island hopping?
What are the different choices? Is plane the best option, and if so how much does it cost? Any site recommendations would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for your help. |

There is a ferry that you can go on between 4 of the main islands (Maui, Kauai, Big Island and Oahu). You can put your car on and go . I am sure if you go on site and look up the SuperFerry, you will find something reasonable. If you have any questions you can email me on VT. I live on the Big Island. Good luck.

Aloha. The superferry has been a big problem for the Save the Whale group and the start up and running of the ferry has been a rought beginning. Right now the superferry is temporarally out of service. The only Island now that you could do is Oahu to Maui. The cost factor is around $40 per person, taking 3-4 hours to go between the two Islands. The Big Island is one year, at least, away. Check them out at www.superferry.com
Hawaiian Airlines flys to all the Islands and it only takes about 30 minutes to go from one to another. Costs a lot to those that aren't in a high income bracket. See their website: www.hawaiianair.com I have heard of a less expensive local airline, but I don't know anything about it. Called "Go", I believe.

A number of local airlines are available. Go!(Mesa Airlines), Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines around $40-$50 one way depending on when you book.

"Expensive" or "inexpensive"?
Those are very subjective words that can be very misleading. What I find inexpensive may not be another's opinion. Likewise expensive. On our last trip to Hawai'i, my wife and I did two weeks on three islands (Kaua'i, Moloka'i, and Maui). Follow this link to my portion of my blog pertaining to the interisland flights: http://www.att.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87&sub When island hopping, plan as far in advance as possible and book early. Book flights for early morning (6am) or late afternoon (4 or 5pm) flights for lowest cost. The midday to mid afternoon flights are when all the flights from the mainland are connecting and they charge the highest. Be sure to look at the smaller carriers like Island and Mokulele for good pricing. Yes, you'll be on smaller aircraft so the ride might be rougher, but you can save some money if they fly to where you need to go.
