Lviv Visiting Stryj
Posted: Mon February 18, 2008 12:41 PM UTC
Hello

I'm planning on flying into Lviv this summer, with the hope of visiting Stryj as part of my genealogy research. I speak Polish, but not Ukraine. Will this be a problem? Also how far is Stryj from Lviv.

Thanks in advance.

The town Stryj is one of the main towns near Lviv and there should be no problem to get there. According to my experience in Lviv Polish is more common than English - generally. For example, when I spoke at a hotel with receptionist in English and she saw my Polish passport she insisted to speak Polish.:)

Stryj is located about 80 km south from Lviv - highway M06 - quite good road.
You can get there by bus (many of them daily) from bus station on Stryjska st, also - by train from main train station.
You won't have any problems with your Polish there.

Following on from my previous question, I've been given postcards that my Dad wrote in 1942, whilst in a German prison, to his family who lived in Stry. The address given is ul Prywytna. My family were forced to leave Stryj around this time, so I have no further information. Would street names have changed, once the country became part of the Ukraine?
