Sheffield Nice Cafés in Sheffield and best area to live
Posted: Mon February 18, 2008 10:58 AM UTC
Hey everyone,
I moved to Sheffield last summer and I'm still desperately looking for nice Cafés preferably some with sofas and alike.

I'm currently living in Crookesmoor but thinking of moving to another area, but I'm not sure where (but one or two nice cafès around is very important ;-). I have to admit that I haven't seen very much of sheffield up to now but would like to change that. Any suggestions where to live are very welcome.

Hope to hear from you :)

Hi Tatjana!

Welcome to the greatest city in the UK - I hope you're enjoying your stay here! :-)

As I live quite a few miles north of Sheffield city centre, I'm a bit out of touch with the cafe scene in the centre of town. However, for cafes, bars and restaurants, I would generally recommend heading to the student areas of Crookes, Broomhill, Hunters Bar, West Street, Leopold Street, Ecclesall Road, Division Street and the surrounding "Devonshire Quarter".

Hopefully, you'll identify some nice cafes on the following sites:

http://www.spinsheffield.com/cat/3/Restaurants-Bars-Nightlife - this website includes virtual tours of dozens of cafes and bars in and around Sheffield.

http://www.city-visitor.com/sheffield/cafes.html - an extensive list of cafes in and around Sheffield.

http://www.sheffielddirectory.co.uk/local/Food_and_Drink/Cafes/ - another long list of Sheffield's cafes!

You can find lots of information on the busy and informative Sheffield Forum website (www.sheffieldforum.co.uk), which includes a popular sub-forum dedicated to "Going out in Sheffield" (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=26) as well as other sub-forums dedicated to housing, jobs, sports clubs etc.

Many of my friends and work colleagues (a lot of whom came to Sheffield as students) live in and around the Broomhill/Crookes area and they love it there!

I believe that Sheffield is less centralised than many other cities, and a lot of people say that it resembles a "collection of villages and small towns" rather than the major city that it is. Consequently, there are lots of nice places to live away from the city centre (each with its own supermarket, park, pubs, shops and restaurants...) but the greatest concentrations of eating and drinking establishments are around the city centre, so you'll probably want to base yourself quite centrally.

There are lots of new apartments being built all over the city centre, as I'm sure you'll have noticed! Rents are higher in the city centre, and you'll get less for your money than you will out in the suburbs, but you'll have all the cafes right on your doorstep!

Hope that helps in some way!

Best wishes,

Jonathan

PS. If you haven't already adopted one of the Sheffield football teams since your arrival, be sure to make the wise choice and support Sheffield Wednesday! ;-)

Hi Tatjana - Welcome to Sheffield and VT! Are You a student, or working here? Are You thinking of renting or buying? Do You have transport, or are You reliant on public transport? Where do You come from originally? Sorry for all the questions, but they might give me a better idea of how to answer Your question.

As You probably know, the housing market is not so good at the moment in the UK, but South Yorks is much cheaper than a lot of areas - Buy the Morning Telegraph newspaper on Fridays to check out prices of houses for sale/ rental to get an idea. Sheffield is unique in the UK for having an area in the Top 10 highest priced properties, and also one in the bottom 10

Agree with SWFCFan re websites to check, places to look for living etc. (Don't agree with his advise on supporting SWFC though - If You have any interest in Soccer You will be sharp enough to support Sheffield UNITED! - As You might have realised already there is friendly rivalry between Sheffield's 2 main soccer teams)

Also check out www.itchysheffield.co.uk

I've just got in from work, so I'm a bit tired and can't think of any cafes with sofas at the moment - but will have a think about this for you.

Lots of the coffee shops have high stools and small tables. Some of the pubs/bars in Sheffield serve coffee during the day, then alcohol early evening and into the night.

Starbucks next to the children's hospital, opposite Weston Park museum has comfy chairs, and might have sofas - I've only nipped in for a coffee to take away, or sat outside, so not taken too much notice.

Lounge on West Street has sofas, and I think they serve coffee during the daytime.

A place serving good Italian coffee, but no sofas is PJ Taste on Glossop Road, near the University tram stop, opposite the Barracks. Revolution in West One has comfy sofas, and I think they serve coffee during the day. There's a place on Ecclesall Rd, that serves breakfast, then coffee during the day, before serving lunches, then afternoon tea, then evening meals - Can't remember its name at the moment - its the street number I think - will try to find out for You.
Marks and Spencers in Fargate, Waterstones in Orchard Square have coffee bar with comfy seating. I can't think of a 'Friends' coffee place at the moment.

Hope this is OK for now - will try and find out more ASAP

Best Wishes,
Sue x

Heeey , first off, "welcome to the greatest city in the UK" <-- Agreed =D, and that gentleman is a sheffield wednesday fan too ;-) nice!
I just cam back from a two month stay in Sheffield and loved it (the city will always have a place in my heart ^^) Now to the question!
I liked the cafès on division street a lot ( get out of the tram at west streets and walk any street down, you'll hit devision street) and I can recommend bungalow's and bears cause its really really nice comfortable there and I liked the music a lot! So if you didn't already, check it out!
god, miss Sheffield so much, *sigh*..
cheers, maria
