| Cadiz | Safe inexpensive area in Cadiz Posted: Sun February 17, 2008 04:36 PM UTC
I guess my question would be for Cadiz residents and this might not be the best place, but I would be grateful for any help. I homeschool my children and would really like to spend 6-8 weeks in Cadiz to jump-start our Spanish. I know summer rentals from June costs more than 1000/month, but is there a possibility of finding a 2-bedroom place for around 400 Euros per month if we came within the next month or so? We are not looking to be in the Old City and would probably be happy within 10 minutes walk to the beach. (the only place I know is the area near Hotel Barcello but I don't know what the area is called) What other areas can you suggest that is within a short bus ride to swimming pools or community facilities?
Thanks in advance,Roz |

Thanks qaminari. Holiday lets are too expensive for us though I have revised our budget so it's more realistic for the short term. I have decided to put up an advert on a website, and think we will find something soon. If anybody can give us tips on areas that would still be welcome.

Hi, I think the cheapest you could probably find is about 450 euros until the end of June and then they'd put the rent up in July and August. Or maybe they'd spread the cost of the higher rent out over each month. These are the most common practices here. I am something of an expert flat hunter here in Cadiz! I've had plenty of practice. I live in the Loreto which is near very start of Cadiz in the new about 10 mins walk from the beach. It is a cheaper area. I pay 450 until the end of June for a very small 3 bedroomed flat. The rent will go up a bit in Summer but it won't be like the Paseo Maritimo where you end up paying 1000 a month.
Don't think the new town is cheaper than the old centre if you are looking near the beach. These are the main holiday home areas with ridiculous rents in summer. You can get some OK prices along the beach front til the end of June though. You could try looking in Cortadura )the area right by the main swimming pool) too. In the very last building in Cadiz there are usually places for rent. The cheapest area would probably be Bda de la paz or near Corte Ingles, but these aren't the best areas although you seldom see problems. A good web site that you can also put in English is Loquo.com or mundoannuncio.com which is OK too. Though perhaps your first port of call should be Cambalache.com (if any of these don't work try changing.com for .es). There aren't that many flats for rent this year as many people are selling, but it is certainly very possible to find a place if you come now. let me know if you need more help. Yours, Julie ( a cadiz resident)

Hi Julie
Many apologies for this late response and thank you for your offer. My Spanish is basic so I have struggled with reading the ads. Cambalache is good and I have responded to English ads (3 of them) in lo quo cadiz but unfortunately they are scams (all inherited their flats, have a deceased partner/parent, are moving and need someone to just look after their property hence low rent, and are willing to post their keys to me overnight - for a deposit by Western Union no doubt). Found other websites (enalquiler.com) though it seems difficult to negotiate for 2- 3months. I am unwilling (unable)topay more than 550 unless it's more equipped than the student flats seem to be, and we are not after luxury. It would be good to meet you if we get there. Although our primary purpose is to connect with the local scene it would be nice to also meet some 'expat'community and find out what's available in terms of leisure/ educational activities, holistic health stuff, art shops and health foods, etc. I see you have lots of wonderful pages for me to read when I get some time and I look forward to them. Regards, Roz
