We are four adults disembarking from a cruise ship on the morning of May 9th and would like to rent a car, or hire a driver for the day...needing to return by 7:00PM. What would be the cost of a rental or a driver with car?

My wife and I rented a car right at the dock from an international car rental company. Make sure that you get a good road map and mark the dock your cruise ship is located at, for the return. It is a little tricky in the port area. Once we got out of the port, drove up to Lucca and spent lunchtime there. See my Lucca pages for tips. After Lucca, we went to Pisa and parked right near the famous leaning tower. Had a late afternoon pizza in Pisa. See my tips on Pisa for the restaurant. Very good pizza with a view of the leaning tower from the patio seating. Got back with plenty of time to spare. Cost? I believe it was around $100 USD, but times have changed, so the price must have gone up as well. I do know that ship shoretours cost a lot more then doing it this way, renting a car. Just get back in time, maybe aim for 1 hour before sailing to play it safe. We could leave the car right at the dock in front of the ship when we returned. How easy is that. You could reserve ahead of time to know the price and make sure you get a vehicle. The roads are great and you should have no problem even if you go to Florence.

If there will be four of you, a driver might make sense, especially if you plan to do some wine tasting. In addition, a driver/guide can probably get you to more places more quickly than if you would do it yourselves, and finally he would be allowed to drive into the historical centres which are limited traffic zones (see http://www.bella-toscana.com/traffic_violations_italy.htm ). I took an excellent tour with Giovanni Sirabella who is a specialist for shore excursions from cruise ships docking at Livorno http://www.sunflower-tours.com
