Sevilla Sevilla during Easter Week 2008
Posted: Sat February 16, 2008 06:58 PM UTC
Hello,

I am looking to travel from the U.S. to Europe March 17-26 with a flight into Madrid. I would like to visit Cordoba, Sevilla, Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Ronda and Grenada. Ideally in this orfer, but that would place me in Sevilla on the Thursday before Easter, which is VERY expensive. It appears Thursday-Saturday night stays are very expensive during this time. My question is to find out what Sevilla is like post Easter Sunday. Is the city still charming or very crowded and loud? I'm thinking I can perhaps reverse my itinerary above and arrive in Sevilla on Easter Monday instead. Please reply on your thoughts on this or my itinerary overall.

Thank you!

Penitents' procession in Seville is on Easter Monday, it will still be very busy, see http://www.artesacro.org/holyweek/monday.html.

Holy Week runs from Sunday 16th until Sunday 23rd. Let's not try to confuse the issue by talking about 'Easter Monday. The processions in Seville last during the week and end on Sunday 23rd morning. between end of Holy Week there is a 'lull' for 2 weeks before the annual Feria starts. The in between times are of course still busy but not as 'frantic'. Travelling within this period is always going to be busy and reservations will be necessary especially on Mad-Seville route either by train or plane. Thursday night in Seville is important for processions. They will be all night. I would recommend reading http://www.exploreseville.com/events/semana-santa.htm
Seville is very acceptable at any time and Spring is great but if you get a chance to witness the 'semana santa' week then it will be worth while. Having said that, most cities and towns will have their own special 'pasos' and Jerez for example is one of my favorite cities for watching in the evening when the weather is warm. Enjoy your trip !

Have you thought of "couchsurfing" or "hospitalityclub"?They are webpages where travellers can offer you accomodation free! I was in Cordoba last Easter and we were told everything was fully booked but we found a simple hostel while sitting in a square having a beer.Just ask the locals.Good luck!
