| Melbourne | winery tours Posted: Fri February 15, 2008 10:22 PM UTC
Can anyone recommend a good winery day tour from Melbourne. Preferably with some variety of wineries and lunch included. What prices and is it value for money? We are trying to get around with not hiring a car, and winery tours mean that we can sample the product without worrying about needing to drive afterwards.
Do they just do the Yarra valley, or are there alternatives? |

You could also try this site: http://www.visityarravalley.com.au/search.asp
I had a quick look and there are lots of options available, including Melbourne pick up/drop off. As a cheaper alternative, you could take the suburban train to Lilydale (end ot the line) and be picked up there. Train city to Lilydale is about an hour. Two of the best wineries are De Bortoli and Domaine Chandon, the latter was (maybe still is) owned by the famous French champaigne company Moet Chandon. Here's a link to that particular tour: http://www.visityarravalley.com.au/tours2.asp?tourcode=4455 Don't drink too much or else you'll miss the train back to the city - LOL

Yarra Valley is the main wine growing region near Melbourne but there are also vineyards on Mornington Peninsula, for example Montalto Vineyard & Olive Grove (www.montalto.com.au). I am just reading in a brochure that wine lovers can choose from 52 wineries to sample pinot noir, pinot gris and chardonnay... I now only name you things I read in my info material, I have not tested this myself.
So they recommend Montalto and Max's at Red Hill. Both offer dining. On this website you can read all (or most...) about wine and food in the area: http://www.visitmelbourne.com/displayobject.cfm/ob There is also a link to wine tour operators on this website: http://www.visitmelbourne.com/displayobject.cfm/ob Several operators offer tours to other regions than the Yarra Valley, as Mornington Peninsula. Enjoy the wines! Sissi
