Bus company "ADO" has an almost monopoly on service connecting Mexico City with Oaxaca. This information and information about places to stop and see are well-covered in the major guidebooks. I recommend Lonely Planet's Mexico guide for your reading.

Thanks for the INFO!! I live in a part of the Baja Calif. Peninsula where there are NO book stores and will not have time to get to any prior to leaving. Your assistance is appreciated for helping to limit searching when we get over to the mainland.... GRACIAS

Busses from Mexico City departing for Oaxaca mostly leave from the city's eastern bus terminal, referred to as "TAPO." Departures are about every hour between the period 6 a.m. and Midnight. There's no need to advance book, you can just show up and buy a ticket for a seat on the next departure out - if you won't be staying in Mexico City.
