Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Tour Mont Blanc in the spring

What are the trekking conditions like at the end April - beginning of May? My partner and I would like to do the Tour Mont Blanc (as per Cicerone) around this time, but we have never done any hiking/trekking in the Alps.

the TMB trek is fairly high and you should expect snow that time of year.
the only time of year where you can be pretty sure that it's snow free is from mid july to mid august.

this is too early to do.
i did it in early june once and it was dangerous in parts and we should have had gear, i.e. ropes and crampons or snowshoes. if you have that, then you can do it. the col du bonhomme was impassible w/o gear and col de ferret was very tricky. but if you have gear and are experienced in the mountains you could do it. i doubt many of the refuges will be opened that early.

The huts do not start to open for tourists until mid June. Before then a few might be available as unmanned ski huts. There is avalanche danger on some of the high cols, besides the difficulty of passage w/o crampons, ice axe ropes etc.. Trekking season for most tourists is mid June until mid September to have a hut to hut travel with cooked meals etc., otherwise it is wild camping with high mountain exposure and dangers of avalanche to be aware of.
