| Río Dulce | Rio Dulce area Posted: Thu February 14, 2008 03:09 PM UTC
Hi, again! I'm looking for the bestplace to base as I check out the Rio Dulce/Livingston area. Should I stay in R.D, or Liv? Also, can I rent a boat to take me up and down the area? I'd like to see the towns around Lake Izabal and the 7 Altares. I know it's kind of spread out, so I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Garrett

I have never been to either, but I can mention that what I have heard about both suggests that Rio Dulce would be more pleasant as a base.

it will be impossible for you to use livingston as a base and explore the area so i would suggest staying in rio dulce. you can do a day trip out to livingston from there. it is not too spread out. renting a boat is somewhat expensive, depending on how many people you are but is a very good way to get around.

Thanks, I figured as much, Livingston seems rather hard to travel from. I also want to go to El Estor {I think thats what it's called} on lake Izabal. I'm getting pysched about the trip now, reading so much stuff I'll probably forget half.I will check my saved comments when I'm at a internet shop to see what I forgot. Thanks again, Garrett

Rio Dulce –
We just came back from Guatemala. On the river - we did not like the idea of staying in the village so we stayed in Finca Tatin on the riverbank and in the Jungle. Exciting. From there, it is about 15-20 minutes by Lancha to Livingston, and they organize tours (sail, walk) there and to the Siete Alataros. You can hire a kayak at the Finca, for the whole day, and go to the Biotopo and the hot spring on the river - nice experience. Make sure you get to the thermal waterfall in Finca El Paraiso on the lake. Unusual fenomena.

thanks, the finca sounds like a good place to start out from. I'll definately check out the thermal waterfall at Paraiso. Garrett
