Sydney The Dreaded Hayfever
Posted: Wed February 13, 2008 08:42 PM UTC
Hi,

I'll be visiting Australia this year with my girlfriend who suffers quite badly from hayfever back home (Scotland) during the summer (the 30 minutes of sun we get mid-June).

We will be visiting Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney and would really appreciate any info/advice as to whether she is likely to have any problems, and if so what times of year are most irritating?

I know its a bit of an odd question but information regarding this is hard to come by and I was wondering if anyone who suffers from this in the UK has found it to be more/less of a problem in Australia.

Cheers!!!

I do get hayfever, but found it worse when I visit the UK..Both times I have been, its been summer over there..and Ive ended at the doctors. I suggest that she gets some Zytec or similar and just takes one a day...Be prepared, and hopefully you will have a wonderful time

sorry didnt answer when its worse over here.. Of course winter is always the least amount of pollen, and i personally find spring and summer quite bad...remember though, we have some wonderful hayfever medications that are available over the counter.

November seems to be the worst month for me and for most of the people I know who suffer from hay fever or sinus. As already suggested Zyrtec is available over the counter and one in the morning should keep the fever at bay. There is also Telfast and other such brands available. Phenergan is good for allergies but will make you drowsy. I try to make do with non-chemical type medications and the best I have found is the good old Garlic + C and Horseradish tablets, available at any chemist store or supermarket.

October and November is the worst for me...or any of the country areas...once i leave the city im bad!!

I take Clarinase, but you need to show your ID when you buy this antihistamine (because of the suda-effedrine in it) Polaramine and Telfast are the other good ones to take, polaramine is good if you get skin irritations, and best to take at night as it can cause drowsiness!!

I used to suffer from severe hayfever and was taking anti histamines every day. Now I only take them maybe once a week. I find Zyrtec is the best, and works really quickly. Rhinocort is also brilliant (a nasal spray, tastes ghastly but works a treat)

As for it being worse? well unless you are going out to work in the hay fields at the height of summer, im sure she will be fine.

You dont say when you are coming either??

In Brisbane we get windy weather in August and that is when people can suffer from hayfever. During August the wind blows the dust in from out west and also our beautiful national flower, the wattle, is in flower then but it does give some people hayfever.

It really depends on what she reacts to, we have a lot of different pollens from the UK. With some luck she may be OK.
We don't have winters like the UK where everything dies off, leaf-less trees etc - most of our plant life is evergreen so we have pollens all year round. I always have the worst sinus problems in spring and autumn.

Several of my friends who suffer with hay fever say that spring when many trees are flowering is the worst. Many take Zertec or Telfast which seem to work well and don't cause drowsiness.

I don't think she'll have a problem in June. As Deb (Adelaidean) said it's winter here and pollen is worst coming into spring. (August winds....through to November). Have fun downunder!! Cheers, Ann :o)
ps..& thumbs up for all the other answers guys! ;o)
