| Palermo | Travel from Palermo to Mezzojuso Posted: Tue February 12, 2008 12:38 AM UTC
I am going to be on a cruise ship where one of the ports is Palermo. My grandfather was from Mezzojuso and I understand there is still some family there. I may be interested in trying to travel there when we dock since I believe it is only about 22 miles. What would be the best way to do that? Bear in mind, I have a limited amount of time as I must be back at the ship by late afternoon. Any help would be appreciated.

The best way to do it is by a taxi with a set fee for the round trip. There are always taxi cars and vans at the cruise ship ports. Make sure that you get the amount agreed upon before getting in or know the rates for the mileage you will be traveling. I did this in Messina to Taormina and it worked out well. The driver made sure we got back in plenty of time to board. Figure that you want to get back to the dock 1 hour before sailing, that way you have a half hour lee-way. Again this is the best way.

Thanks for your prompt response. That does sound like the best way, but is it safe?

Ciao, Safe? What guarantee do you have on anything in life. If the driver of a taxi would be willing to take you there and back, of course. Capisca? Sicily is barren in a lot of areas but the beauty still surrounds you. My grandmother was from Messina and I have 1,500 relatives in Italy. If you go for lunch, try to get Involtini alla Siciliano. I would return just for that dish. Mamma Mia. Do you go to the Amalfi Coast at all? If so, try the after dinner drink,Lemoncello. They may have it in Sicily, as well. BTW, Mezzojuso is about 25 miles away from Palermo. Arrivederci, Larry
