| Guernsey | Passing through Guersey to France Posted: Mon February 11, 2008 03:28 AM UTC
I have a day stopover in Guernsey on a cruise. I would like to get off the cruise in Guernsey (the cruise ends the next day in Dover), and then take a ferry to Saint Malo in France. I don't know how to go through immigration and customs in Guernsey and then exit for France. The Guernsey website talks about 15% customs charge on my possession, including clothes. Would this apply to me as a one-day visitor? Can anyone help me? Thanks so much.

Unless you are importing things to sell (or they think you are) ortrying to export ditto (or something expensive you have recently purchased) you will not be subject to charges.
http://www.gov.gg/ccm/navigation/home-department/c http://www.guernseytrademedia.com/traveltrade/faqs.aspx I can't find any specific mention of what is concerning you. Is it, perhaps, the reference to charging on 'other goods' above the value of 145GBP? I am sure this refers only to goods newly purchased on the island. If customs charged 15% of the value of what's in your suitcase there would be very few visitors to Guernsey, and the people who live there would very rarely travel outside the island (not least because it would take hours and hours to go through everyone's bag and estimate the value of their belongings!).

1) As regards going through immigration, we don't know what nationality you are but if (as I would guess from item 2) you are American, you can enter the UK, including Guernsey, without a visa for a stay of less than 6 months (which obviously covers a 1-day stay) and the same applies upon arrival in France for a stay of less than 90 days in the whole of the Schengen group. Naturally, you need a passport.
2) I assume you are talking about the 15% retaliatory charge on goods originating in the USA, which is mentioned in the website below. This is for COMMERCIAL imports, not travellers' used possessions! http://www.gov.gg/ccm/home-department/customs-immi
